Sting, also known as "enlightenment", is the third of the twenty-four solar terms. The sun reaches 345° ecliptic longitude and intersects on March 5-6 in the Gregorian calendar. Stings reflect the phenomenon of germination and growth of natural organisms affected by changes in rhythm.
"Stung festival to smell the thunder, wake up the dormant overwintering insects." The ancients called animals hiding in the winter and not drinking or eating, which is "sting". When the first thunder of spring sounded, it awakened hibernating animals and dormant insects, and called this day "sting".
The stinging festival has a very important significance in farming, it is a reflection of the ancient farming culture for natural seasons, people regard it as the beginning of spring ploughing. During the stinging season, everything recovers, birds and flowers sing, nature has a new vitality, most of China enters the spring ploughing season, and the fields are a busy scene. The proverb also says: "After the Sting Festival, spring ploughing cannot rest" and "Nine Yang blossoms, and the agricultural work comes together."

The stinging god of the festival is the god of thunder, and the ancients imagined that the god of thunder was a bird-billed man, a big god with wings, holding a hammer in one hand and combosing many heavenly drums around the body with the other, emitting a rumbling thunder. On this day of stinging, there was a thunder god in the heavenly court to beat the heavenly drum, and the human world also used this opportunity to cover the drum. Among the traditional instruments, the most compatible with the early spring "thunder and hidden" is the big drum. Some old craftsmen will have this preference, skinning the drums in the spring thunder season. The drums made at this time are the most convenient, and in the old saying, they sound well and can be used. Spring thunder moves, rain moistens all things, bringing vitality. Drumming during spring ploughing also has the meaning of praying for a smooth year and a good harvest in autumn.

According to legend, the white tiger is the god of tongue and right and wrong, and every year on the day of the sting, he will come out to forage for food, open his mouth to eat people, and if he commits it, he will be calculated by the villain's evil words, so that everything will not go well during the year. In Guangdong, there is a saying that "sacrifice the white tiger to resolve right and wrong", and the white tiger's mouth painted with lard is painted on paper, which means to feed it so that it cannot be exported to hurt people, and it also means that there is no longer right and wrong.
In Shaanxi, Shanxi, and northern Jiangsu, there is also a folk proverb that "when you eat a pear, you will be spiritual for a year". "Pear" is pronounced "away", it is said that eating pears can keep insect pests away from crops and save a good harvest in the year. In ancient times, those who walked the west also took the harmonic sound of "leaving", which often had the meaning of "leaving home to start a business". Later, people ate pears on the day of stinging, and they also had the idea of "striving to honor the ancestors".
