Good evening to all book lovers, welcome to the reading column "Encounter" produced by Fan Deng Reading.

Today I would like to share with you Chekhov's masterpiece of short stories- "The Man in the Set".

Chekhov was a master of Russian critical realism, and together with Maupassant in France and O.R. Henry in the United States, he was called "the world's three major short story writers".

Gorky once said of a man:

"Just one word creates an image; just one sentence creates a short story."

This man is chekhov, a Russian writer known as the "king of the world's short stories."

Chekhov lived in the late 19th century, the darkest era of Tsarist rule, when police detectives were secretive and whistle-blowing was rife.

He wrote about society with his pen and wrote seven or eight hundred works in his lifetime, both a mockery of ugly phenomena and a deep sympathy for the poor people.

The protagonist of "The Man in the Set", Belikov, is a typical representative of it.

Belikov is a small-town Greek teacher, lonely and eccentric, who likes to curl his whole body in a condom.

Not only that, but he also imprisoned all his thoughts in fixed thinking, imagining what happened in work and life every day, and finally dying in worry.

Although Belikov is a character in the novel, his appearance "in the condom" is like the embarrassment of excessive self-consumption in mortal dust:

Things haven't happened yet, and all kinds of obstacles have been thought out;

Always afraid of not being recognized, so it is difficult to sleep, sleep restless;

Repeatedly calculate which thing to start with, and finally do nothing;

……

Voltaire said: "What makes people tired is not the distant mountains, but a grain of sand in the shoes." ”

What really traps us may not be the dilemma we are in, but the internal friction of our own thinking.

Worry-free and blind anxiety at work

Belikov is a secondary school teacher in the town.

His life, like the Greek language taught, was old-fashioned and dull.

But he has a lot to worry about: for example, the longevity of the school.

In his opinion, naughty fighting among students is resolutely prohibited, and they must be expelled.

Another example is the moral cultivation of teachers.

In his eyes, it was not allowed for female school supervisors to accompany officers until late.

The only criterion that Belikov espoused was official notices and newspaper articles.

He is not accustomed to the times and changes, unwilling to change the obsession in his heart, and feels that all new things have a potential threat.

Therefore, he has always maintained a simple life of home and school, going to class every day with a pale face, shutting himself in his home after work, not going to parties, not playing cards, not eating supper, and not chatting with people.

The reason why Belikov did this was that he was afraid that there would be chaos, which would implicate himself and cause more trouble.

Nakamura Tsuniko wrote in "Worth it on Earth":

"Why do people feel uneasy? Most of the time, this uneasiness is due to thinking too much about the future. ”

Although everything should be done twice, if you think too much, it will become a disaster.

Not only will it create new troubles for yourself, but it will also make people's lives complicated and burdensome.

This may also be a common problem among people in the workplace, who unconsciously play the role of Belikov:

After waking up in the morning, my mind is full of struggles, every day of work is a bitter ordeal, and on the weekend, I fall into the abyss of anxiety...

Making up all the problems in the brain is bigger than the sky, presupposing too many self-disorders, and mixed with unfounded worries.

On average, a person will have more than 6,000 thoughts a day, and every time they make a choice, they will consume a little psychological energy.

Psychologists refer to this as "self-depletion."

In fact, the vast majority of ideas are meaningless.

Some disasters, but imagination, with the worst results to scare, torture themselves;

Some of the worries are just unknowns, wearing pessimistic filters to judge the next move.

What can really bring people down is never the work itself, nor the frustrations, rumors, denials and mistakes, but the worry about the unknown.

These worries are anxieties about what has not yet happened, and anxieties about the results of wild imagination.

Interpersonal cranky, too concerned about the outcome

The famous psychologist Adler said:

"All people's troubles stem from interpersonal relationships."

Belikov's misfortune also stems from interpersonal relations.

He didn't understand the human condition, and he didn't know how to deal with it.

Fearing that he had misbehaved, he did not dare to hire a maid, and only hired an old man in his sixties as a cook;

Worried that eating vegetarian is harmful to the body, but eating meat and afraid that others will say that he broke the vows, so he chose to fry the sea bass with cream;

Fearing being killed in the middle of the night, he lay in bed trembling with fear and had to cover his head with a quilt before falling asleep;

Although these fears are speculation, in the depths of Belikov's soul, the desire to maintain a good relationship with those around him can be uncomfortable:

Visit each teacher's residence uninvited, sit there silently for an hour or two, and then leave.

He longs to be understood, but his words and deeds often backfire, and he is often angered by some inexplicable conjectures, his lips trembling and restless.

Caring too much is also a kind of harm to yourself.

Even a dismissive remark, a dismissive look, and an inadvertent expression will extend countless bad results.

There is a famous "white bear effect" in psychology.

What is said is that the more you tell yourself to "don't think about white bears", the more you will have the image of a white bear in your mind.

When we cling to wild thoughts, we unconsciously fall into the vortex of self-consumption and cannot jump out for a long time.

However, being yourself is the core of all relationships that are good.

As Yang Dai said:

"We were so eager for outside approval that we finally realized that the world was our own and had nothing to do with others."

True security comes from the calm and composure of the heart.

If someone else's sentence makes you care, ask it, and if something makes you mind, say it boldly.

Live in the eyes and mouths of others, never find yourself; say goodbye to the small theater of the heart, in order to see the beauty.

When you are beautiful, the world will give you more beauty back.

There are gains and losses in the feelings, and there is no end to the entanglement

Everyone wants to have a happy love, and Belikov is no exception.

At a banquet, he first met Valenka and was fascinated by her singing.

With the help of the principal's wife, the two slowly came together and sat together in the box of the theater to watch the play.

For Belikov, who is in his 40s, falling in love is indeed a great joy in life.

The thought of marriage also flashed in his mind, but when he thought of the responsibilities and obligations he would assume after starting a family, he felt no longer joy, but fear.

Moreover, the thinking and behavior of the Valenka siblings are too unruly.

For example, they are teachers, and they even ride bicycles through the streets, which is simply unorthodox.

He took a chance to persuade them, but the stinky and long preaching completely annoyed Valenka's brother, who grabbed him by the collar and pushed him downstairs.

The awkward scene of him rolling downstairs is seen by Valenka and his friends.

The little beauty in Belikov's heart was also broken by the laughter, and knowing that he was ugly, he lay down in his tent and covered the quilt when he returned home, and did not say a word for several days, and died in terror before long.

The people of the town thought that love could save Belikov, but they did not want to take the whole life.

There is nothing more sorrow and pity for adults than this.

Meet the person you like, afraid that you are not good enough, and imagine all kinds of lost scenes before you get it;

When it comes to choices in marriage, instead of making a decision immediately, always worrying about "what if... What to do? ”;

Many people are in a relationship with insecurity.

Because of the loss and loss, I am afraid that everything will become a mirror flower and water moon, so I regret missing it in the entanglement.

Lin Huiyin said:

"Life is often like this, many hard thoughts and meditations are incomprehensible, and in some ordinary moment, everything has an answer."

Indifferent arguments, meaningless accusations, and low-quality communication are the poison that hurts feelings.

No matter how good the feelings are, they must also understand the "anti-internal friction".

The biggest health care is to stop internal friction thinking

Looking back on Belikov's life, it is ridiculous, pitiful, hateful.

He uses "condoms" to protect his own safety, blinds his life insights with narrow thinking, and closes the vitality of life with old-fashioned thoughts.

After going around, I was unable to escape the condom.

In the end, he put too much baggage on himself, and there was a little wind and grass on the outside, and the uncontrollable wind and noise inside.

Haruki Murakami said:

"You don't have to worry too much about the present, and you don't have to worry too much about the future.

There are no useless experiences in life, and when you have experienced some things, the scenery in front of you is different from before. ”

The real way to health, in fact, is very simple, is to stop internal friction.

Look at success or failure, look at interpersonal relations lightly, and look down on gains and losses.

Just do it, don't worry about the result; if it doesn't work, accept the result.

Click "watching", may you stop the internal friction, rest assured in the present, not afraid of the future, and live a harmonious life in uncertain days.
