Yu Jigao, born in 1932, is a native of Tongshan, Jiangsu Province. He graduated from the Fine Arts Department of Nanjing Normal University in 1955, and in 1957, he participated in the preparation and was transferred to the Jiangsu Academy of Chinese Painting, specializing in the creation and research of gongbi flower and bird paintings. He is a director of the China Artists Association, a national first-class artist, the vice president of the Jiangsu Provincial Academy of Chinese Painting, the vice chairman of the Jiangsu Provincial Artists Association, the committee of the Chinese Painting Research Institute, the vice president of the China Gongbi Painting Society, and a member of the Xu Beihong Scholarship Committee.
Born in 1932 in rural Jiangsu Province, Yu Jigao, although his family was poor, this also honed his strong will and love of labor. Perhaps because of his life in the countryside, his feelings for flowers, birds, fish and insects were unusually deep, and the seeds of art also took root and sprouted in his heart.
He began to receive the enlightenment of painting education when he was a teenager, and it was not until he was admitted to the art department of Nanjing University in 1951 that he began to study painting systematically. At that time, his Chinese painting teacher was Fu Baoshi, and at that time, their group of students was called the luckiest students. Because before that, Teacher Fu Baoshi only taught art history, and never taught Chinese painting creation techniques.
In the winter of 1959, the province held an important meeting of the literary and art circles in the Fu Hougang CPPCC Auditorium, which was attended by many provincial and municipal leaders and well-known figures in the literary and artistic circles. Suddenly, Mr. Fu Baoshi called Yu Jigao and asked him to prepare the tools and paper for painting to come to the meeting, and it turned out that between the meetings, many painters wanted to paint. Yu Jigao came to the venue with a pen and paper, and Mr. Chen Zhifo first opened his pen and drew a light and elegant plum in the lower right corner of the four-foot Xuan. "Who's going to draw next?" Someone asked. Mr. Fu Baoshi suddenly burst out a sentence: "Ji Gao, you come!"
Yu Jigao thought that he had heard wrongly, and the people present were the top figures in the Jiangsu calligraphy and painting circles at that time, and Yu Jigao, who was a student, did not dare to write casually. But Fu Baoshi encouraged him again, and Yu Jigao finally plucked up the courage to draw a bright red camellia under The Plum, Fu Baoshi and Chen Zhifo both smiled approvingly at him.
Next, Fu Baoshi added a strong stalagmite to the painting, Mr. Jiang Ren painted three starlings, and the famous calligrapher Hu Xiaoshi wrote down the title of "Yingchun Tu". After being framed, the "Spring Festival Map" was hung in the CPPCC auditorium for a long time, but during the Cultural Revolution, it disappeared again. Many years later, Yu Jigao heard that the painting was collected by the Nanjing Museum, and he specially went to take a photo and placed it in his study as a permanent witness to the friendship between himself and his teacher.
Yu Jigao has been working in the fine arts industry since graduating from Normal University, and in 1957 he began to participate in and was transferred to the Jiangsu Provincial Academy of Chinese Painting, and was invited to join the creation of the painting "Peacock Diagram" in the Great Hall of the People, as well as the creation of "Peony Crane" for the Diaoyu Island State Guesthouse.
Since then, many of his works have been collected by the National Art Museum of China, the Nagoya Museum in Japan, the Philippine Presidential Palace and other places, and he has also participated in many art exhibitions and held solo exhibitions. In the early 1980s, Mr. Run Run Shaw, a Hong Kong film and television tycoon and a famous patriotic industrialist, cared about the education cause of the motherland and donated 100 million Hong Kong dollars to ten universities in China, of which Nanjing University received 10 million Hong Kong dollars. Before going to Hong Kong to receive the grant, the leaders of NTU agreed that they should bring a gift that represented the characteristics of Jiangsu in return, thinking that Nanjing was a heavy line of Chinese painting, so they asked Mr. Yu Jigao to paint a beautiful work.
