Senior members of the royal family are worth around £20 million.

They don't gamble on horses or buy lottery tickets, and they don't put much effort into it. So, where did all this money come from?

The first is the monarch's appropriation, a payment paid annually by the government to the Queen. That figure soared from £7.9 million in 2011 to £85.9 million last year.

That doesn't include the estimated £200 million security costs, which are usually meant to "protect" the younger members of the royal family that you may never have heard of.

George Osborne, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, made the disastrous decision to give the Queen 25 percent of the royal estate's income. Although the Royal Estate has been owned by the public since 1760.

The agency owns 250,000 acres of land, many scattered properties and, importantly, even rivers and seabeds.

The seabed alone gave the queen a huge windfall from the construction of the wind farm, which was supposed to go into public finances.

Why are we giving hundreds of millions of pounds of public money to probably the richest households in the UK, while people across the country struggle with high energy bills and food?

Compare the funds received by the British royal family to those of other European monarchies: £86 million in the UK, £12 million in Belgium, £10 million in Denmark and £6 million in Sweden.

It was followed by the Duchy of Lancaster and Cornwall. These were royal possessions of the 14th century.

The only reason they were not handed over to the public in 1760 along with the Royal Estate was that they were worthless at the time.

In 1760, the Duchy of Lancaster was worth just £16.92. Now they are worth millions.

The Savoy estate owned by the Duchy of Lancaster covers much of central London – as early as 1399, when the Ducaly was established, its value was negligible, but today it is extremely valuable.

The Duchy of Cornwall, which began in 1337 and provided prince Charles with more than £20 million a year, claimed to be private property and had always claimed to be its own private fiefdom unless it involved tax confiscation.

Unlike other properties, it does not have to pay corporate tax. This principality also owns a large amount of property throughout the country.

In London, this includes an oval cricket ground. Additional taxes for Prince Charles.

But as mentioned earlier, there is now one exception to the super-rich club: Prince Andrew, the old duke out of the scandal.

According to the Sun yesterday, Andrew will turn to Her Majesty for help to help him and Fergie get through the storm.

But we need absolute assurances that such funding will never involve public funds.

If the Queen uses the money from the Duchy of Lancaster (which seems likely), she can offset the taxes as a business expense.

That would mean the royal family would pay less in taxes, thus providing a public subsidy for Andrew's prank.

This is not allowed to happen. The public will find this idea offensive.

We need a clear statement that any money handed in by the Queen will not directly or indirectly affect public funds.

Looking ahead, andrew faces the sad reality that he will have to start living within his means. But by then, the spurned prince will not receive many more invitations.
