Mr. Hu Shi's Cool Comments on the First-Class Scholars of the Republic of China (Selected Editions of Hu Shi's Diary)

author:Published six

Unlike Lu Xun's "flowing account" style of private diaries, Mr. Hu Shi's diary is a semi-public type of writing. Informative, all-encompassing, and thought-provoking to read. And because of his lofty position in modern Chinese history, Hu Shi's evaluation of the first-class scholars and literati at that time has nothing to do with right or wrong, but has his own arrogance and standards. On February 24, 60 years ago, Mr. Hu Shi passed away due to a sudden heart attack when he was welcoming the new academicians of the "Academia Sinica" cocktail party, and he made this compilation to commemorate this Huizhou sage.

September 24, 1921 · Liu Wendian

Shu Ya, a native of Hefei, is very talented and can be recited in both the old style and the vernacular. There are very few people in the Literature Department of the Northern Kingdom who can pick up a pen to compose, as far as I know, there are shuya and Xuantong. Shu Ya was the laziest, but he was so angry that he could make such a death work and make this immortal work!

12 April 1922 · Gu Jiegang

Jie Gang's achievements in recent years have been the greatest. Every time he did something, he always tried his best to do it; the result of doing so was not only to do that thing satisfactorily, but often to get a lot of achievements in addition to that thing. No one of his peers could compare with him. The case of "Poetic Discernment" is the best example.

30 May 1922 · Zhao Yuanren

At night, he wrote the preface to Zhao Yuanren's "Chinese Voice Gramophone Film Textbook". Yuan Ren has a lot of experience in this book. He was a born dialect scholar, a musician, and a trained in linguistics, so he was best worthy of this,—— in fact, there was no second person in the country who was more suitable than him. The best part of this book is the correct pronunciation.

August 11, 1922 · The Zhou brothers

After the lecture, he went to see Qiming, talked for a long time, and ate at his house; after the meal, Yu came back and talked for a long time. Brother Zhou is the most adorable, and their genius is very high. Like talent has both appreciation and creativity, while Qiming's appreciation is good, there is less creation. Qiming said that his grandfather was a Hanlin, funny like Yucai; one day, he talked about a friend who was grateful, saying that after his death, he suddenly came to see him in a dream, wearing a fur coat, and said to him, "I can't repay you in this life, so I have to try to repay you in the next life." He continued: "Since I saw him in that dream, every time I eat meat, I have always been a little suspicious. "This kind of funny is indeed a bit like Yu Cai."

August 28, 1922 · an old scholar

Today's Chinese academia is really withering and falling. The only four old scholars left were Wang Guowei, Luo Zhenyu, Ye Dehui, and Zhang Binglin; followed by the semi-new and half-old transitional scholars, only Liang Qichao and a few of us. Neizhong Zhang Binglin was already semi-stiff academically, Luo and Ye had no system of organization, and only Wang Guowei was the most promising.

The day before yesterday, the newspaper published the news that Mr. Wang Jing'an (Guo Wei) committed suicide by throwing himself into the river, and my friends were very unhappy after reading it. This old man is really cute and respectable, and his knowledge is so vast that there is almost no second person today.

Wang Guowei (1877-1927)

2 February 1929 · Liang Qichao

As a public association of The League of Men Liang:

Literature is credited, the Shenzhou Revolution.

Life self-promise, China's new people.

Ren Gongcai is highly talented but cannot have systematic training, is studious but cannot be a good teacher and friend, enters the world too early, becomes famous too quickly, and appoints himself too much, so his influence is very large and his own achievements are very small. In recent days, I have been thinking about the most immortals in his life's works, and it is quite difficult to name one book after another. Later I concluded that his "New Folk Theory" can be regarded as the greatest contribution of his life. The "New Folk Theory" criticizes the shortcomings of Chinese culture and praises the virtues of the West to give the mainlanders the law, which is his most immortal merit. Therefore, my Bang Lian pointed out his desire to be "the new people of China".

In his later years, his views were so mistaken by a group of less talented people that he embarked on the road of defense, so when he initiated the "Chinese Cultural Academy" in the first six or seven years, there was a fallacy that "Mahayana Buddhism is the highest religion of mankind; the culture that produced Mahayana Buddhism is the highest culture in the world." All of this was Ouyang Qiwu, Lin Zaiping, Zhang Junjie, a group of mediocre people who mistook him. After all, he was a wise man, so he soon abandoned this plan.

If he had not retired in his later years, my union would have said:

China's new people, life aspirations.

Shenzhou Revolution, Literal Miracle.

August 14, 1930 · Xia Zengyou

A few days ago, when I went to the library of Qingdao University, I saw that there were about 100 copies of Xia Zengyou's "History of China" on the shelf, so I asked for a set, re-read it during my illness, and deeply admired Mr. Xia's skill. I want to sort it out for him and make a new version.

2 January 1935 · Liu Bannong

The death of Liu Bannong is a pity, the early training of the half-peasant is too bad, halfway out of the house, hard work to do learning, finally very fruitful. His style (taste) is not high, and sometimes it is inevitable that there is a low-level humor, but it is not conscious. He strives to do elegant things, but people find it more tacky. But he is a man who has grown all the time, and his efforts are constantly the least attainable. A "diligent" word covers a hundred shortcomings.

May 4, 1935 · Fu Si Nian

Meng Zhen is a very good leader, he has vision and strength, so he has achieved very good results in running Shi Yan.

Fu Si Nian (1896-1950)

May 5, 1935, Gu Jiegang

Jie just came to talk, brought me the "Wu Shu Zhai Annals" given to me by Mr. Gu Qiqian, hurriedly read it, and was very pleased with its details.

6 June 1935 · Fu Si Nian

It is very interesting for Meng Zhen to talk about his ancient history experience, especially the problem of the Qin nation. He was a very intelligent man, and he was very familiar with ancient books, so he could touch the bypass and sort out the chaos. Of course, he is unparalleled in today's rulers of ancient history.

15 January 1937 · Soup with Tong

Read the first volume of Tang Xiyu's Manuscript History of Buddhism in the Southern and Northern Dynasties of the Han, Wei, and Jin Dynasties. Proofread for him all day.

This book is excellent. Xi Yu and Chen Yinke are the most diligent and accomplished people in this study today. Xi Yu's training is extremely sophisticated, the tools are good, and the methods are meticulous, so this book is the most authoritative work.

Tang Yongtong (1893-1964)

18 January 1937 · Soup with Tong

Went to Peking University and talked with Mr. Tang Xiyu. He considered himself timid and could only make careful verification, not bold assumptions. This is a humble word. Xi Yu's book is extremely careful, paying attention to evidence everywhere, and does not dare to use the undocumented statement even though it is reasonable. This is the most imitatable attitude.

He also said: There is a private opinion, that is, I am unwilling to say that everything good is from a foreign country. I also laughed and said to him: I also have a private opinion, that is, what bad things come from India! We all laughed.

In fact, this is not the legitimate attitude of historians. Historians are documentaries only. If some good things come from overseas, why not admit it honestly?

21 February 1937 · Chen Yinke

Reading several of Mr. Chen Yinke's papers, Yin Kezhi's historiography is of course the most knowledgeable, insightful, and most able to use materials today. But his article is really not written very cleverly, punctuation is particularly reliable, not enough to be legal.

22 September 1939 · Zhao Yuanren

Yuan Ren is a genius of Hope, but because his interest is too mixed and his efforts are too divided, his achievements are not as good as his friends at that time.

3 January 1940 · Gao Mengdan

A few years ago, in "Written after the Anniversary of the Birth of Confucius", I said: "All the people who have been most shocked by the new culture of this world, their personality can be compared with the sages of all times, not only have no shame, but often surpass their predecessors." "I named nine people: Gao Mengdan, Zhang Yuanji, Cai Yuanpei, Wu Zhihui, Zhang Boling, Zhou Yichun, Li Siguang, Weng Wenhao, and Jiang Jiangzuo. I would now like to make up a few people: Ding Wenjiang, Hou Debang, Chen Guangfu, fan Xudong.

6 March 1940 · Cai Yuanpei

When I arrived home, I learned that Mr. Choi died in Hong Kong yesterday at the age of seventy-three (1867-1940). Talking with Brother Zhou Kunsheng, he lamented that Cai Gong was really able to be a leader. His own academic achievements and ideological status are not high. But he can fully employ people, and the results of the people he uses can be regarded as his achievements.

Cai Yuanpei (1867-1940)

On April 16, 1946, Chen Yinke

Yin Ke has a very thick inheritance, reads very carefully, and works very well, and is a major town in the field of mainland historiography. Today, both eyes are abolished, which is really a great loss for the academic community.

22 May 1947 · Zhang Yuanji

Zhang Yuanji, his greatest contribution to historiography is the publication of historical books and historical materials, he presided over the "Four Series" and the Hundred Editions of the "Twenty-Four Histories", etc., so that general historians can easily obtain the most ancient historical books and ancient books, and their credit can be described as unparalleled in the Field of Chinese Historiography. I had thought that the printing of the Hundred Commentaries on the Twenty-Fourth History was more important than Ruan Yuan's Commentary on the Thirteen Classics and the Records of Proofreading. (Excerpted from the "Letters of Hu Shi", "Letter to Sa Bendong and Fu Sinian")

Dec. 20, 1950 · Fu Si Nian

Fu Si Nian died today!

This is china's biggest loss! Meng Zhen is the most talented, can do learning, can also govern, and can organize. He can best remember and judge, so his research achievements in ancient Chinese literature and cultural history have the function of opening up mountains. In terms of governance, he was the first time at Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou, the second time at the Institute of History and Language of the Chinese Research Institute, the third time as the president of Peking University, handling the work of "demobilization", and the fourth time as the president of National Taiwan University, and he made great achievements in two years.

Where in the country today can such a person with the highest genius! He has always been the most loyal and loving to me. His roots in Chinese learning are much more advanced than mine, but he always writes to me, always calling himself "The Year of the Student", thirty years as a day.

We do learning, with different skills, and the insights are often close. For example, when I wrote the preface to "Selected Words", I pointed out that the new forms and new styles of Chinese literature often come from the folk, and when they meet highly talented literati, only by adopting this new way and adding superb content can the first-rate literature be produced. Later, the low-energy literati could only imitate, could not create, and this new way was often rigid and became dead literature. Meng Zhen has a discussion of "life, old age, illness and death", which is the same as mine.

Another example is my "Speaking Confucianism", which was greatly inspired by his article "Zhou Dongfeng and Yin Relics", which I have publicly described.

Few of today's people who govern ancient history can compare with his "bold assumptions" and "careful verification"!
