Intel accelerates the layout of the automotive field and will launch an autonomous electric shuttle bus in the United States in 2024

Financial Associated Press (Shanghai editor Niu Zhanlin) - Intel's autonomous driving arm Mobileye announced on Monday that it plans to launch self-driving electric shuttles in the United States in 2024 with partners.

At the beginning of this year, Mobileye and Geely's smart pure electric brand Extreme Kr jointly announced that the two sides will cooperate to develop a new consumer-grade pure electric vehicle with L4 autonomous driving capabilities, which is expected to be launched in China as early as 2024.

Mobileye, Benteler electric vehicle systems and Beep will launch self-driving electric shuttles on demand, which are expected to be equipped with 12 to 14 seats and have no steering wheels and pedals.

Hinrich Woebken, an advisory board member of mobility service provider Beep, said the vehicles would operate in a "closed zone" with a speed limit of 35 miles per hour.

Mobileye plans to deploy robo-taxis in Israel and Germany by the end of this year and is currently awaiting regulatory approval. The company is also partnering with Silicon Valley startup Udelv to put self-driving electric delivery vehicles into use in the U.S. by 2023.

Mobileye will prove to U.S. federal and state regulators that its self-driving system will be safer than human drivers.

Johann Jungwirth, vice president of integrated mobility services at Mobileye, said: "From a technology perspective, we are very, very bullish on this technology, and very strongly believe that this technology is actually close to being ready. ”

Executives believe that shuttles will help save driver costs, address driver shortages, and address urban issues such as emissions and congestion.

"We see opportunities and growth potential in the self-driving shuttle and self-driving delivery vehicle market, which we currently see as a blue ocean."

BENTELER Electric Vehicle Systems, a subsidiary of german automotive components group BENTELER, will produce autonomous electric shuttles for Mobileye that meet automotive and public road safety standards.
