Next Lou Dort? The Thunder gave a "child labor" contract to the rookies on the team!
According to NBA well-known journalist Shams Charania, the Oklahoma Thunder officially signed a four-year, $6.4 million contract with the rookie Aaron Wiggins, with the fourth year being a team option.
Wiggins is the Thunder's rookie with the 55th pick in the second round at this season's draft. He is 198cm tall and weighs 90kg, and is a flanker with good athleticism and good scoring ability. After the draft, he signed a two-way contract with the Thunder. He has made a total of 31 appearances for the Thunder so far, and in the 21.9 minutes per game, he can contribute 7.4 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.1 assists and 0.7 steals to the team, shooting 48.6% from the field and 32.9% from three-point range.
Wiggins' contract is reminiscent of Luguentz Dort, who is now the team's starting force. Dort was the loser in the 2019 draft, and after losing the election, the Thunder signed him a two-way contract. Because of Dort's bravery in the regular season, the Thunder quickly issued him a similar multi-year "child labor" contract. With a whopping 17.2 points per game this season, Dort is the most sought-after talented outside rookie in the entire NBA, yet his salary is only $1.78 million. Even next season, he'll have to pay another low salary of less than $2 million a year.
Wiggins' current ability is naturally still a significant gap from Dort, but for a low-pick rookie, it is very rare to be able to play such a performance without many opportunities. If he can continue to make progress, the Thunder have made a big profit.
