How do the judges work in a thrilling, fast-changing short track speed skating game? When a collision occurs, how is each penalty made? Compared with the PyeongChang Winter Olympics, what adjustments have been made to the sentencing scale of this Winter Olympics? On February 11, the Voice of China of the Central Radio and Television Corporation held an exclusive dialogue with Yang Yang, a famous short track speed skater and deputy referee of the short track speed skating men's competition at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.

Transform from athlete to referee

Strive to make accurate judgments in the shortest possible time

At the short track speed skating field of the Beijing Winter Olympics, a familiar figure appeared in the referee's seat, she was the mainland short track speed skater - Yang Yang. Yang Yang has participated in three Winter Olympic Games and won 4 silver and 1 bronze. Today, she is not far from the short track speed skating she loves, but is only returning in another way.

In 2009, after retiring from the army, Yang Yang began to work as a short track speed skating referee. This is her sixth time to participate in the Winter Olympics with a license, this time as a referee.

The Beijing Winter Olympics event schedule is very tight, and short track speed skating is almost every other day. On this day of rest in the middle of each two match days, the referee team will convene a team leader meeting. At the meeting, each team may ask a variety of questions, "We will work with the organizing committee to solve it through consultation." If it is a normal match day, there is a meeting of referees to summarize the previous match and look forward to the day's game. ”

From an athlete to a referee, Yang Yang's focus has changed, "When an athlete does not focus on which person fouls, but subconsciously thinks that this person 'should be fouled', waiting to see how the referee decides." Now, as a referee, any decision must be justified. And referees need a lot of experience because the situation changes rapidly. ”

Short-track speed skating competitions are fast and fierce, allowing certain physical contact, but any pushing or obstructing other athletes will be considered fouls. The penalty rules are so complex that one mistake can implicate two or three athletes. "Referees should be particularly cautious, need to consider a lot of details, and strive to come up with accurate judgments in the shortest possible time." Yang Yang said.

Affected by the epidemic last year, many events were cancelled, but Yang Yang could not rest. Almost every two weeks, all the registered referees of the International Skating Union take part in the exam and collective discussion, "we are also constantly learning, and all the small sentences and penalties are summarized." ”

The referee has a number in his eyes and is stateless

Yang Yang said he was proud to participate in the Beijing Winter Olympics as a Chinese referee. But as a referee, first of all, we must maintain a good attitude, "we can't pay attention to which country the athlete is, we only have his number in our eyes." When the referee awards penalties and determines the promotion, it is necessary to first say the athlete's helmet number, not which country fouled. ”

Short-track speed skating referees are not "one-man battles" on the field, but team battles, with four or more referees in each event.

Yang Yang introduced that the referees will communicate through the headset, report their "found" number and what foul this number has because of. After everyone has discussed in the headset, the referee gives the final judgment, and then the referee uniformly informs the arrangement recorder and the announcer, so as to constitute the complete process of the referee's work in the whole game.

Every penalty is based on evidence

Short track speed skating competitions are very dramatic, but from the referee's point of view, the penalties are all standard. Yang Yang said that every article of the referee's manual is very clear about every detail that may be encountered in the game, and there is evidence to rely on and reason to tell. "We divide each area very carefully, and each area has its own language code, including two meters before the curve, the curve, the relay, the starting point, etc."

The referees on the court are very cautious and will not change their sentences easily. "If sometimes the audience is late enough to see the referee announce, it may be that we are looking at the cameras from different angles."

Yang Yang believes that the Winter Olympics have brought obvious changes to the entire city construction. "Regardless of the north and the south, if you go to a shopping mall, you may be able to see the ice rink, the base of people participating in ice and snow sports is large, and the success rate of our achievements in the international arena is definitely also large."

Yang Yang feels that a child should be exposed to at least one sports project, whether it is a collective project or an individual project. "Sport can have an impact on you from the inside out, and it can make people happy physically and mentally."
