Science and Technology Daily Beijing, September 12 (Reporter Qu Jian) According to the latest news from China Huaneng, at 9:35 on the 12th, the No. 1 reactor of the huaneng Shidaowan high-temperature gas-cooled reactor nuclear power plant demonstration project of Huaneng Shidaowan high-temperature gas-cooled nuclear power plant reached a critical state for the first time, and the unit officially opened the operation with nuclear power. This ball bed modular high-temperature gas-cooled reactor with completely independent intellectual property rights in China and the characteristics of the fourth generation of advanced nuclear energy systems in China has successfully critically closed the border after the completion of the double reactor cold test, the double reactor hot test and the first charge this year, and is one step closer to the grid-connected power generation within the year.

According to China Huaneng, critical is the starting point of the reactor's nuclear power operation, which is equivalent to engine ignition. The demonstration project reached a critical state through the operation of the number of spherical fuel elements and the "double adjustment" of the control rod, which lasted a total of 23 days from the first charge to the critical.

Led by China Huaneng and jointly built by Tsinghua University and CNNC, the demonstration project has an installed capacity of 200,000 kilowatts, which is one of the preferred reactor types for China to implement the "going out" strategy of nuclear power. High-temperature gas-cooled reactors have good safety, high power generation efficiency, strong environmental adaptability, wide range of uses, and broad prospects for commercial application in the fields of nuclear power generation, combined heat and cooling and high-temperature process heat, which is an important path for China to optimize energy structure, ensure energy supply security, and achieve the goal of "double carbon".

The localization rate of demonstration engineering equipment reached 93.4%. As the world's first ball bed modular high-temperature gas-cooled reactor, the demonstration project has more than 2,000 sets of equipment used for the first time alone, and more than 600 sets of innovative equipment, including the world's first high-temperature gas-cooled reactor spiral coiled DC steam generator, the first high-power, high-temperature hot electromagnetic bearing structure main helium fan, the world's largest and heaviest reactor pressure vessel, etc., which is of great significance to promote China's global leading edge in the field of fourth-generation advanced nuclear energy technology.

In the next step, the demonstration project will also conduct zero-power physical tests to verify core performance, control rod value and availability of nuclear instrument monitoring system equipment. China Huaneng will continue to standardize the follow-up commissioning and trial operation of demonstration projects to ensure that the first reactor is connected to the grid in 2021.
