According to the Associated Press, the New York city government employs about 370,000 people, including teachers, firefighters and police officers, and only about 1% of employees who have not yet been vaccinated against COVID-19 are facing dismissal.

Last week, New York Mayor Eric Adams said of the impending dismissal of New York city employees that they were largely complying with the COVID-19 vaccine order.

Adams said at the time: "To live in such a complex city, there must be rules. We have to follow the rules, if you're an employee of the New York City, you have to get the COVID-19 vaccine, you have to comply with the COVID-19 vaccine order. ”

New York City Hall statistics show that as of the end of January, more than 4,000 Of The City's employees had not complied with the vaccine order.

Since the dismissal notice was received last week, the number of New York city employees who have not been vaccinated against COVID-19 has declined.

New York City officials said Friday (Feb. 11) was the deadline before it was known exactly how many employees had been laid off.

A coalition of New York City employees filed a lawsuit to prevent a large number of New York City employees from being fired. On Thursday (Feb. 10) afternoon, a judge ruled in favor of the City of New York.

Some New York City employee unions have struck deals with the City government to allow members of their unions to continue unpaid leave until this summer and fall.

Until Sept. 5, members of the United Federation of Teachers in New York City will have the option to continue unpaid leave.

The New York City Teachers' Union said 700 members who had been on unpaid leave for several months in a row chose not to extend unpaid leave and had received notice of dismissal.

The Police Benevolent Association of New York City said fewer than 50 of its members received termination notices.

The City of New York noted that before the end of October last year, about 3,000 employees had not been vaccinated against COVID-19 and had been on unpaid leave for several months. In addition, 1,000 of the new employees who began working in the New York City government after August 2 last year did not show their COVID-19 vaccination certificates. As a result, about 4,000 employees are currently facing dismissal.
