Asus, launched at the end of last year, took the lead in supporting the new PCIe 5.0 external power supply interface and provided corresponding connection cables for users to match with Nvidia's GeForce RTX 30 Founders Edition graphics card.

PCIe 5.0 external power supply lines are available in 12Pin and 12+4Pin, the latter is a full-specification cable that can meet PCI-SIG's "12VHPWR High Power Connector (H+)" standard and can be rated up to 600W. The previously released ROG Thor 1000W Platinum II is available in 12Pin specs, and asus official sources show a power rating of 450W. However, ASUS will also launch a new power supply in the Loki series, and its PCIe 5.0 external power interface will be changed to a 12+4Pin specification.

MSI is a major board manufacturer in the PC industry, and its power supply product line is much less famous. According to Wccftech, MSI's next-generation MEG and MPG series power supplies will also support the PCIe 5.0 power supply standard, providing corresponding interfaces and connection cables. Leaked information indicates that MSI plans to launch two new MEG series power supplies and three MPG series power supplies this year. The former will be available in 1000W and 1300W sizes, with 80 PLUS Platinum certification, which will be based on the new MSI GI engine, while the latter will be available in 1000W, 850W and 750W specifications and receive 80 PLUS Gold certification.

It is understood that the new power supply of MSI's series will provide 12Pin to dual 8Pin connection cables, as well as complete 12+4Pin connection cables. The former should limit the power rating to 300W, while the latter reaches 600W. Of course, MSI will still offer standard 8Pin-powered connection cables. In addition, neither the MEG nor the MPG series provides dual PCIe 5.0 external power interfaces.

It is unclear when and pricing the MSI series of power supplies will be launched, and more details are expected to be announced by MSI in the second quarter of 2022. Previously, MSI launched its first power supply with a power rating of 1000W, the MPG A1000G. The emergence of a new MEG series of power supplies with higher positioning, as well as higher wattage products, means that MSI is likely to want to further seize the power supply market.
