Manuel Monteserin: A library that looks to the future by learning from tradition. The project seeks to strike a balance between the traditional uses of libraries and the new uses demanded by contemporary citizens.
The building will co-exist three distinct and complementary spaces:
1. A space for concentration, quiet reading and meditation. We call this area "Silent Space."
2. A space where you can learn and learn with others. We refer to this space as the Collaborative Workspace.
3. A space to communicate, display and share. A great cultural forum. We call this space the "plaza."
From the city, we will pass through a garden that connects us to the square. It is elevated above street level in order to be independent of traffic and overlook the landscape. The Plaza hosts cultural events, conferences and exhibitions. From here you can access different information points and make your way through ramps to different areas of the library. As we walk up the ramp, thousands of reference books accompany us. They are arranged on a large shelf that spreads throughout the space. This ramp and its library create a huge central space for the library. Facing south, we found the quiet area divided into four levels. These spaces are used for activities that require more attention and more tranquility. This is a closed and soundproof area.
This is a closed and soundproof area. It is built of wood and has an independent vertical loop. The façade with eyes allows you to read, meditate or study while looking at the scenery, golf courses and the sea on the horizon. This area represents the idea of sitting on a windowsill reading, watching the scenery and sun protection. The collaborative workspace will be located on the third floor on the north side and will be used for activities that do not require absolute quiet. There will be a children's library on the second floor. There are several tables on the third floor where you can study and work in groups. The fourth floor is the classroom. All floors are connected to a lounge area equipped with a vending point where you can have a coffee and chat with friends.
The library aims to blend modernity with tradition. Inspired by traditional Hanok architecture, the movable floor rises three meters above the ground and is independent of the ground. Open car park is located on the ground floor. Thus, it allows for natural ventilation and avoids erosion of the ground by digging the basement. Timber structures and tiled roofs enable fast cleaning of the construction. It also enables buildings to be dismantled and recycled if necessary in the future. The building also adapts to different directions. The deep eyes of the south façade protect us from direct sunlight. On the other hand, the north façade will be enclosed with a curtain wall to ensure maximum light. On the west side, the building is protected from sunlight by placing toilets and vertical communication cores. In summer, the square curtain wall and skylight can be opened to ventilate the courtyard, reduce humidity, and ensure a better sense of heat.
