Lithuanian President Nauseda said on February 9 that he would ask the United States to permanently station troops on the ground to help strengthen security in the region.

The U.S. military has deployed 500 rotating soldiers in Lithuania since 2019 to assist NATO forces in deterring Russia on the Eastern Front. Nauceda said this is the best way NATO can boost security and deterrence for Lithuania and the region as a whole.

Lithuania regarded Russia as the greatest national security threat, and Lithuania also allowed Taiwan to set up a "Taiwan representative office" in Vilnius, and its diplomatic relations with China were downgraded to chargé d'affaires.
