ROONEY: I knew United were going downhill, so I left

Rooney recently made public in a documentary about his unusual move to leave Manchester United in 2010 and insisted that he left the club when he realised the club was going downhill.

Amazon will release a brand new documentary on Friday detailing The Incredible Career of Rooney, the legendary striker who has gained an unprecedented insight into his career and private life.

One topic he had rarely talked about before was his attempt to leave Manchester United after the 2010 World Cup, when City were suitors and he was unhappy with the direction United were headed.

Rooney, 12 years later, still insists he knows the club is going downhill and when Ferguson made the same decision, he immediately jumped ship. Rooney said: "They gave me a contract with a weekly salary of £200,000, so it's easy for me to say 'five years, £200,000 a week... Let me sign it now', it's easy for me to do. But I want to be successful on the pitch – that's more important to me. ”

'In fact, if you look back from that meeting 5 years later, when Ferguson knew where the club was headed and got out of there as quickly as possible, they're still cleaning up the mess.

Ferguson left Manchester United in 2013 and Rooney eventually returned to his boyhood club Everton. Since then, United have struggled to reach the Scotsman's unattainable heights at the club.

"I walked into Ferguson's office and I asked him ' What are our plans?' At the moment, we have brought in two young England players who have not been proven. I remember Ferguson's answer was 'Get out of my office.'" ”

In the documentary, titled Rooney, where many of his former colleagues at Manchester United and England give their opinions, Neville makes no secret of his anger at the way Way Rooney tries to get himself away. He said: "My biggest disappointment with Wayne was that when he made the announcement publicly, just as we walked into the dressing room, his teammates were playing games. Don't do this to us, go somewhere else. ”

"We watched Sky Sports News at the time and we knew we were like being hit by a brick because it wasn't him, it wasn't him. He never hurts his teammates, he's a team member. That was the only time I felt he was going to let himself down. ”

Neville did, however, think Rooney's courage in facing legendary Ferguson is commendable. "Now I'm sitting here and I think, 'It takes real courage and courage to do what he does,' and none of us are going to do that, and I'm definitely not going to go to the coach and say, 'By the way, who are you signing?'" You'd better sign a few good players or I'll leave!" (Laughs). We're going to be thrown out of that door sooner than we're going to finish the trial, so we're not going to do that. ”

"But look at Robertson, Cantona, Keane and Rooney... These are the personalities and roles that are able to do that because they are a great player and they have that advantage. That's what sets them apart. ”

With the documentary Rooney coming out on Amazon on Friday, fans can learn more about one of football's greatest strikers, who himself tells the story of some of the most important moments of his life, with his closest people including his family, friends and wife Colleen.
