Recently, Friesland released a new report revealing five major trends driving food, beverage and supplements in 2022. The report, titled Shaping the Future of Nutrition, provides insights into the latest market and consumer research to help brands identify innovations in the active, high-performance nutrition market.

Health anxiety has never been stronger in the context of COVID-19, but FRSLAND research shows that consumers are responding to this problem in new and unexpected ways, including recognizing the link between personal health and environmental health.

The first trend is the health of the planet. According to the report, 65% of consumers believe that food and nutrition brands should do more to protect the planet. As consumers become more ethical and environmentally conscious, building brand trust is critical. Ms. Friesland said transparency is not negotiable in building that trust, but brands also need to make statements meaningful and tangible to stand out from consumers.

The second trend is physical and mental health. The pandemic has created a rare, unified experience for people around the world, and if there's one word to sum up how people feel, it's stress. By 2022, Friesland said, people will want to recover and protect their future by building greater resilience, which will be a physical and mental issue. According to the report, 60% of consumers say that improving their overall health is their top priority, with sleep, mood and physical health being the top priority.

The third trend is flex vegetarianism. The future of food and drink is flex vegetarianism, and consumers are increasingly adding plant-based ingredients and animal protein sources to their diets for healthier purposes.

The fourth trend is gut health. For many consumers, overall health is the ultimate goal for 2022, with two-thirds of consumers globally recognizing gut health as the key to achieving overall health, Friesland said. Friesland predicts growth opportunities for food, beverage and supplement products targeting trends such as immunity or sleep, including ingredients that promote intestinal development, such as prebiotics.

The fifth trend is healthy ageing. As the global population ages, consumers are rethinking what healthy aging is. Consumers of all ages are actively re-evaluating their health and diet, looking for the benefits of healthy aging from their daily diets. Friesland says 90 percent of older consumers choose food and beverages over traditional supplements, creating demand for new products that support healthy ageing and target consumers of all ages.

"As consumer behavior continues to change and is influenced by external forces, brands are feeling pressure to keep up with changing needs. It is crucial for brands to embrace and navigate these trends. Global Marketing Director Vicky Davies said.
