Powered by the 2023 Kia Sporting PHEVs is a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 177 horsepower. Connected to this engine is a 66.9 kW electric motor and a lithium-polymer battery. The only transmission available is the six-speed automatic transmission. The South Korean company has yet to announce what the combined output will be, but we expect it to exceed 260 horsepower or the same as the Hyundai Tucson PHEV.

Kia also equipped the Sportage PHEV with a 7.2 kW high-efficiency car charger, noting that it takes about 2 hours to fully charge when connected to a Class 2 charger. Elsewhere, Sportage PHEV has integrated electronic brakes and provides regenerative braking. The EPA will be announced later, but it should be the most efficient Sportage model on sale. Kia also boasts an all-electric range of 32 miles.

Shoppers will be able to obtain the key to the Sportage PHEV in the form of X-Line PHEV AWD or X-Line Prestige PHEV AWD. Like the X-Line models offered by other powertrain options, the PHEV version has a more rugged exterior design, including a unique bumper, side mirrors, glossy black with roof racks and window surrounds, and glossy black alloy wheels.

Both versions come standard with a large number of security features. These include driver attention warning, LED headlights with high beam assist, lane following assist, lane keeping assist, avoiding front collisions, rear passenger alarms, rear view monitors with dynamic parking monitors, reversing distance warnings, avoiding blind spot collisions, rear crossing traffic collision avoidance assistance, safety exit warnings, and smart speed limit assist.

The flagship X-Line Prestige PHEV AWD features all of these features and adds blind spot view monitors, forward collision avoidance with intersection turning, forward stop distance warning, high driver assistance, navigation-based intelligent cruise control curve, reversing stop collision avoidance, remote intelligent parking assistance, and intelligent cruise control with stops. Sportage PHEV will go on sale in the third quarter of this year, with prices to be announced later.
