First of all, I would like to explain my attitude, although everyone has a heart for beauty, but I myself have a strong opposition to the popular beauty method of eyeliner.
In a word, it is summed up: the risk is too high! Too much harm! Ordinary people he can't grasp ah!
Why am I so opposed?
The first practice of tattooing eyeliner is to pierce the dye line under the skin at the edge of the upper and lower eyelashes, thereby increasing the thickness of the eyelashes. At the same time, it can have the effect of enlarging the eyes and changing the appearance of the eyes.
There doesn't sound like anything wrong with that, right? In fact, it is not, and you listen to me slowly talk to you.
Eyeliner may cause acute injury
The hospital I used to work for was near the downtown commercial pedestrian street, and every month during the night shift, patients with burned eyes came to the hospital.
These patients often have similar characteristics: young women, severe fear of light and tears, unable to open their eyes to cooperate with the examination. You can only open your eyes after dropping anesthetic eye drops. On examination, a large detachment of the corneal epithelium can be seen, and the conjunctiva is severely hyperemic.
At this time, asking the medical history will find that these patients are most likely to visit the pedestrian street in the afternoon, "by the way" in the beauty salon to do eyeliner.
The repair of this corneal damage has a time course. If you are lucky, patients need to endure 24-48 hours of pain to slowly improve, a small number of patients with bad luck and bacterial infection, or corneal damage is deep, it may cause permanent corneal clouding, affecting vision.
Why does eyeliner have such serious consequences?
Because this cosmetic surgery is actually a tattoo process, the dye used for tattoos falling off into the eye surface may lead to corneal damage, and the degree of damage is related to the amount of dye shed. Some dyes do not adhere well to subcutaneous tissue and will continue to fall off, so this damage may last for a long time.
Tattoo eyeliner may cause chronic damage
In addition to the acute injuries mentioned above, tattoo eyeliner can also lead to long-term dry eye.
The tears secreted by our eyes also have a layer of grease on the surface, which can protect the tears from evaporating too quickly and also lubricate the eyeballs. This layer of oil is secreted by the meibomian glands, which hide inside the eyelids and open at the edges of the eyelids (near the base of the eyelashes).
During the eyeliner process, needle prick damage and the toxic effects of the dye may disrupt the normal lipid-secreting function of the meibomian glands, so the eyeliner can lead to dry eye disease.

This damage atrophy of the meibomian gland is irreversible. That is to say, once dry eye syndrome is caused by eyeliner, our treatment can only alleviate the symptoms of eye discomfort and delay the progression of the disease, but it cannot fully recover. Perhaps, it is precisely because there are more and more inappropriate "beautifications" for the eyes such as eyeliner, and the incidence of dry eye disease is getting younger and younger.
So, as ophthalmologists, we are against tattooing eyeliner at the eyelid margin. If you must highlight the "eyeliner", then it is recommended to use the way of drawing eyeliner, which is lighter than the damage to the eyes of the eyeline, and it is also recommended to use eye makeup remover products to remove the eyeliner, do not have residual pigments and grease, avoid blocking the meibomian glandular orifice, artificially causing dry eye disease.
