Recently, the movie "Love Myth" has become a topic of discussion in the streets and alleys of Shanghai: the film vividly shows the petty bourgeois mood and city life of this Haipai city; the Haipai culture, Shanghai complex, and Shanghai expression have aroused widespread social discussion.
The artist Yu Xiaofu prides himself on being the "old Keler" of Shanghai and one of the representative figures of contemporary Haipai art. His works, whether it is the picture or the voiceover written for the work, have a strong Shanghai flavor. On the occasion of the Spring Festival in the Year of the Tiger, the "Expressions: Yu Xiaofu Casual Art Exhibition" was held at W&S Art Space in Somermet from January 22.
In 1984, Yu Xiaofu's oil painting "I - Gently Knocking on the Door" was a blockbuster in the selection of the Sixth National Fine Arts Exhibition, becoming a representative painting of Haipai art and Haipai humanistic spirit. In his early years, he immersed himself in the field of comic strips, illustration of foreign literary novels, and also regarded comics as a personal preference, and cherished Chinese and foreign cartoonists. He paints in the stream-of-consciousness writing style of Proust's "Remembrance of The Age of Water", and also carries the humor and agility of "Shanghai Local Estate", with the breath of He Youzhi and Cheng Shifa, mixed with the smell of the city emitted from the old alleys in Shanghai. Yu Xiaofu likes to express history with absurd and complex imagery. Characters of different eras appear in the same picture incredibly, and the contemplative expression and calm gaze, as well as the colorful light that moves around them, blend into one, giving people infinite reverie.
Yu Xiaofu once serialized the illustrated "Yu Xiaofu Small Talk" in the supplement of Shanghai's Xinmin Evening News, creating a small Chinese and foreign character called a doll. The theme of this exhibition, "Expression", is a continuation of the spirit of this column. Yu Xiaofu hopes that through his works, he can give people and himself the deepest comfort in this sometimes helpless and helpless cold and warm world.
