Su Dongpo has been to many places, and whenever he goes to an unfamiliar place, he has to visit and explore famous places. Later generations reading his poems can keep up with his pace and swim the world. This poem "Stone Nose City" is a work he wrote when he crossed the Qin Mountains, and through the different views of northerners and Sichuan people on Stone Nose City, he secretly expressed a little complaint. Because of the comparative writing technique used in the poem, it is very innovative.
Shibi City is located in the northeast of Baoji, near the Wei River, located on the northern slope of Qinling Mountain, and is a post station. Modern people know that the Qinling-Huaihe river line is the dividing line between the north and the south. The climate, geography, customs and other aspects of the northern and southern slopes of the Qinling Mountains are very different. This difference is a good subject matter in itself. The front line of Qinling Mountains was originally a place where soldiers and families had to fight, and without war, the people could freely cross the Qinling Mountains. "Zhengfu" has two meanings, one refers to the person who fights the war, and the other is to point to the merchant brigade of the far gate, which is obviously pointed out in the poem to the person outside the door.
When the world was at peace, the Qinling Mountains were crossed, and the people who traveled between the north and the south were in a hurry, and they could not stay idle for a moment. When northerners came to Shibi City and saw the majestic Qinling Mountains, they all felt that the danger was incomparable. People who live in Shu land come here and feel that Qinling is no more than that. Even if the Qinling Mountains are tall and dangerous, they are not as tall and steep as the mountains of Shudi.
Su Shi and his party marched from the north slope of the Qinling Mountains to the southern slope, taking advantage of the hazy moonlight to cross the rushing Wei River. Along the way, the scenery has changed significantly, and there are beginning to appear flowing water and deep bamboo forests.
Reading the whole poem, you will find that there are three sets of contrasts. The first set of contrasts, the differences between the two sides of the Qinling Mountains during wartime and Taiping. The second group of contrasts, northerners and Sichuanese, saw different feelings about Qinling. The third group of contrasts, Su Dongpo and friends traveling from north to south, the contrast of scenery on the road. He used three groups as if he wanted to say something, and seemed to say nothing.
Some scholars have verified that this poem was written in 1064 AD. In 1063, Emperor Renzong of Song died and was succeeded by Emperor Yingzong of Song. Song Yingzong had a good feeling for Su Dongpo and wanted to promote him to a close minister. However, some people raised objections, feeling that the new emperor had just ascended the throne and was not suitable for promoting Su Dongpo immediately.
The reason is very simple, Song Renzong praised Su Dongpo to be the prime minister of Taiping, and such a talent should be repeatedly sharpened and not entrusted with heavy responsibilities early. In this way, Su Dongpo had one less chance to soar in his career.
Frustrated, of course, I have to express my feelings. When he traveled to Stone Nose City, he would sigh that different people saw different scenery. The implication is that do you think Su Dongpo will be an "official fan", and Su Dongpo's ambition is not to become an official. For example, observing the difference between the north and the south is more interesting than being an official. Of course, this is just a family statement, maybe Su Dongpo doesn't think so, but who knows.
