Gwenplain, originally a descendant of the princes and nobles, fell victim to the political struggles of the nobility at the time of his birth. At the beginning of the novel, he is in his teens and has no effect at the hands of his father's political enemies. So they decided to abandon him. The men wrote the whole story, signed it, placed it in a drifting bottle, and then expelled Gwenpran ashore and threw it into the wilderness.

Later, they met the "philosopher", "prophet", "knowledgeable" wandering entertainer "Bear". "Bear" is a person at the bottom of society, with instinctive kindness, who takes in two children.

"Bear" excavated the characteristics of Gwenpran's "Smiley Man" and "Goddess" (i.e., the girl that Gwenpran picked up, she was blind), transformed her wandering carriage into a stage, and the "Smiley Man" and "Goddess" jointly performed small plays to make ends meet. There should be a twist in the story. One day, the drift bottle from more than a decade ago was washed up to the beach, and Gwenpran was "taken away" by the police, and after a series of rigorous examinations, it was determined that he was a descendant of the nobility, and that he could inherit and enjoy the manor and glory left by his father. In the face of all this in front of him, Gwenplain was a little dizzy, and then a little complacent.

Gwenplain's generous statement counts the extravagance and lavishness of the nobles of high society and the hardships of the survival of the working people.
