Shichahai veteran players reunite on the ice rink Skillful cooperation, wonderful dribbling passing, rapid offensive and defensive conversion... It was a common sight in the Beijing 1979 ice hockey team's twice-weekly fixture matches. If it weren't for the sideburns of white hair and sagging eye bags, it would be hard to imagine that most of the players running on the field with clubs are over sixty years old today. The main members of the Beijing 1979 ice hockey team were students in the ice hockey class of the Beijing Shichahai Amateur Sports School in the 1970s. The Shichahai ice hockey class, which had provided reserve talents for the Beijing team and the national team, was disbanded in 1979, and the students who were full of love for the sport interrupted their hockey careers and went their separate ways. With the successful bid for the Winter Olympics in 2015, more and more Beijing citizens have participated in ice and snow sports, and the ice hockey rink has also emerged, and the flame of ice hockey has been rekindled in the hearts of the old players who once played the ice rink. Just in 2015, nine members of the Shichahai ice hockey class regrouped at the Wukesong Ice Rink, and after more than 30 years, they once again fought side by side. From the initial occasional ice ride to the regular twice a week, former hockey players decided to regroup, naming the team 1979 in an attempt to continue the hockey dream of that year. The fire of the ice hockey in 1979 burned even more in the hearts of these old players than it was then. Pictured here is the 1979 ice hockey team players in a training match on January 30, 2021. Huaiwei is the deputy chief physician of the Emergency Department of Peking University Third Hospital and a ski doctor in the Ski Medical Protection Dream Team for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. Alpine skiing competitions are also known as the "crown jewels" of the Winter Olympic Games. The Winter Olympic track uses icy snow, and the slope of the track is very steep, generally above 30 degrees. In the event of an accident, the ski doctor must carry a rescue backpack weighing more than 15 kilograms and come to the athlete within 4 minutes. In this process, ordinary skiing skills alone are far from enough to meet the rescue mission. Skiing ability is the foundation, medical rescue ability is the core. Since 2018, Wai Wai and his teammates have spent at least 4 weeks of each winter at each year to attend training at designated locations. With the accumulation of more experience, the team continues to grow. It is Huaiwei's wish that Chinese ski doctors can go abroad and participate in large-scale events held in other countries, including alpine skiing guarantees for the Olympic Games.
