The 28nm process contributes 11% of TSMC's revenue: the price is cheap

On January 21, the core research institute reported that TSMC released its 2021 operating report, with annual revenue of $56.82 billion, an increase of 24.9% compared with 2020.

In TSMC's revenue, 44% of the revenue comes from the mobile phone platform, 37% from the high-performance computing platform, these areas are dominated by advanced processes, proportionally, the 5nm process contributes 19% of the revenue, the 7nm process contributes 31% of the revenue, and these two processes account for half of the revenue sources.

The 28nm process contributes 11% of TSMC's revenue: the price is cheap

Among other processes, the 16nm process performed well, contributing 14% of the revenue, while the 28nm process contributed the fourth, and 11% of the revenue came from it, equivalent to 6.25 billion US dollars in revenue. Since the release of the HD 7970 graphics card at the end of 2010, TSMC's 28nm process has been mass-produced for 12 years, and it can still contribute more than 10% of the revenue.

The main reason why the 28nm process has been prosperous for a long time is that the price is cheap, the maturity is high, and it can also meet the needs of many chips, including automotive electronics, power management chips, image sensors, etc. The 28nm process design and production costs are very low.

According to TSMC's plan, in order to meet customer needs such as automotive chips, CMOS image sensors (CIS), driver chips, RF components, etc., it is planned to actively expand the 28nm production capacity of mature processes, and it is expected that in the next 2-3 years, the total production capacity of 28nm is expected to increase by 100,000 to 150,000 pieces per month.
