5. The Voyage, 1492.

Columbus left Spain in August, 1492, and, refitting at the Canaries, sailed westward into the Sea of Darkness. At ten o’clock in the evening of October 20, 1492, looking out into the night, he saw a light in the distance. The fleet was soon stopped. When day broke, there, sure enough, was land. A boat was lowered, and Columbus, going ashore, took possession of the new land for Ferdinand and Isabella, King and Queen of Aragon and Castile. The natives came to see the discoverers. They were reddish in color and interested Columbus—for were they not inhabitants of the Far East? So he called them Indians.

Canary Islands

The Canary Islands (English name: Canary Islands; Spanish name: Islas Canarias) are Spanish enclaves and free ports. Located on the Atlantic Ocean in northwest Africa, on the northwest coast of the African continent are volcanic archipelagos. It is about 130 km east of the west coast of Africa and about 1100 km northeast of Spain. It is about 100 to 120 kilometers away from the southwest coast of Morocco, and is divided into two island groups, east and west. The eastern group includes Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and 6 small islands, while the western group includes Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Palma, La Gomera and Ferro (also known as Hierro). It has an area of 7,273 square kilometers and a population of 1.36 million (1982). So it doesn't belong to any city, it's an independent island, similar to China's Hainan.

In the era when the island was named, the Romans ruled Over Europe, and Latin had a status equivalent to english today. When the Romans arrived on the island, they found that there were many dogs on the island, and the island's natives admired them, hence the locals called canari (Latin, people with dogs), the island is also known as Insula Canaria (Island of Dogs Dog Island).

Subsequently, people discovered that there was a large number of unnamed birds on the island, and then named this bird after the island. After the fall of the Roman Empire, countries continued to use the name with their own spelling habits, such as Spanish Canario, French Canari, German Kanarien, English Canary, etc.

Thus, Native Americans are known as Native Indians, although they do not belong to either India or the Indian subcontinent.
