(Fight against COVID-19) Resolution passed by the Legislative Council of Hong Kong that meetings can be held remotely within a specified period of time
Hong Kong, 19 Jan (China News Service) -- On 19 January, the Legislative Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) passed two resolutions authorizing the Legislative Council meetings or committee meetings to meet remotely within a specified period of time in a manner determined by the Legislative Council in accordance with the Legislative Council's Rules of Procedure.
The resolutions were proposed by Lee Wai-chung, Chairman of the House Committee of the Legislative Council of the HKSAR, as proposed resolutions under the Legislative Council (Powers and Privileges) Ordinance and proposed resolutions under section 75 of the Basic Law of Hong Kong.
Li Huiqiong said at the meeting on the 19th that the two resolutions are to enable the Legislative Council to prepare for the severe epidemic and continue to perform the functions of the Legislative Council in times of emergency and need. She noted that the Legislative Council Secretariat had ensured that the remote meeting process met the relevant requirements and wished to deal with technical issues.
Li Huiqiong stressed that the adoption of the resolution does not mean that the remote meeting will be started immediately, but only that emergency arrangements will be made. She also said that the resolution is not permanently implemented and that the termination effective date is December 31, 2022.
At the meeting on the same day, a number of Legislators supported the adoption of relevant resolutions, hoping to ensure that the work of the Legislative Council will not be affected by the new crown pneumonia epidemic. They also pay attention to operational details, including remote voting, cyber security, etc., and hope that the Legislative Council Secretariat can deal with the relevant issues as soon as possible.
