Former Kazakh leader Nursultan Nazarbayev denied on Tuesday any conflict with his successor, AFP Nur-Sultan reported on Jan. 18. It was his first appearance since the unrest in Kazakhstan.

Referring to his hand-picked successor, Nazarbayev said in a video address: "President Kasemzomarte Tokayev has full authority. He also added that there is "no conflict or confrontation" between the ruling elite.

Nazarbayev said he has been acting as a "retired elder" since handing over power to Tokayev in 2019.

"I'm enjoying the retirement I deserve in the capital of Kazakhstan right now, and I'm not going anywhere," he said. ”

Nazarbayev, 81, is Kazakhstan's first president after independence. He has not made a public appearance since unprecedented unrest broke out in Kazakhstan earlier this month.
