Fang Ziyi, born in 1917, is a native of Fotangao Village, Guoziyuan Township, Jinzhai County, Anhui Province. At the age of 13, under the influence of his father and uncle, he signed up for the Red Army and began a lifelong journey of military service. In the two years after joining the army, Fang Ziyi was often reduced because of his weak body. One day in September 1932, he was laid off again, and sullen and unhappy, he went straight to the Red Fourth Front, told him about his predicament, and expressed his determination to follow the Red Army. As a result, he was assigned to the Tenth Division of the Red Fourth Front, and after several years of private schooling, he served as an officer in the regimental political office. In October 1936, more than 20,000 officers and men of the Red Fourth Front crossed the Yellow River to form the Western Route Army. Fang Ziyi, then chief of the Youth Section of the Political Department of the Red 30th Army, joined the Western Route Army. After crossing the river, the Western Route Army struggled alone and launched one bloody battle after another with the cavalry of the Qinghai warlord Ma Bufang. The Western Route Army was eventually defeated due to a disparity in strength and the exhaustion of ammunition and food. In April 1937, Fang Ziyijiu died and successfully escaped the encirclement and blockade of ma jiajun. By then he was wounded and wearing a pair of shoes sewn with felt on his feet. A few years later, Fang Ziyi flew the plane into the blue sky. He did not live up to Xu Shuai's exhortation in his early years to "fly fast", and became the first pilots in the Red Army with his classmates. When the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea broke out, he commanded the Fourth Air Division to meet the US Air Force and repeatedly shot down enemy aircraft, including the "Air Hero Davis" of the US Air Force's Fifth Air Force. In 1955, Fang Ziyi was awarded the rank of major general. In 2015, Fang Ziyi died of illness in Beijing at the age of 98.
