In recent years, the number of organ donations in our city has been at the forefront of the province, and donors and volunteers of all ages have emerged. Jinhua Red Cross Organ and Hematopoietic Stem Cell Donation Volunteer Service Team is one of the professional service teams established by the Jinhua Red Cross Society in 2017 on the basis of the former Jinhua Red Cross Volunteer Service Team, which focuses on the publicity of human organ and hematopoietic stem cell donation while carrying out Red Cross volunteer service work in various directions and fields. Let's listen to the stories told by three outstanding volunteers on the Volunteer Service Team.
When volunteering
I became a young man
Ding Hong (76 years old)
Retired primary school teacher in front of the station
Jinhua buried the wife of the first person
I am a retired teacher, 76 years old, considered an old man, but every time I participate in volunteer activities, I feel that I have endless strength, the whole person is full of energy, and I feel that this is the best state in my life.
I volunteered because my wife died. In 2013, my wife died of illness. At that time, I learned about sea burials through newspapers, but no one in Jinhua had ever chosen this method. I thought to myself, the old man's hometown is on the Yangtze River in Anqing, Anhui Province, and if his ashes are buried in the sea, it is to let him return to his hometown in another way. At the same time, this is also a new form of green funeral advocated by the state, so I made up my mind.
At first, when I discussed with the children to bury my wife's ashes at sea, the children did not agree, but under my persuasion again and again, they agreed. Since then, whenever someone in Jinhua has been buried at sea, I have volunteered to help with the matter.
It was also at that time that I began to pay attention to various volunteer activities and actively participate, always arriving early every time, trying to do a little more. I learned a little paper-cutting, so I used my strengths to cooperate with various activities and cut different modeling works for different caring people. Everyone loves the crafts I do, and I'm very happy.
Whenever the time is right, I will take my two grandchildren with me to participate in public welfare activities, and they will enjoy it. People I know, when I see me, say not to be too busy, too tired, but as more and more volunteers are contacted, their selfless dedication and love deeply touched me, as long as the Red Cross will participate, I will try to participate, at this time, I became a young man.
To save lives, I'm willing to do what I can
Zheng Fang (54 years old) the most beautiful person in Zhejiang, the moral model of Zhejiang Province, and the good person of Zhejiang
The only volunteer human organ donation coordinator in Zhejiang
I love life, I love life. I have always believed that life is the most precious gift in the world. If I can help others and do something meaningful to life and health, I would do my best.
In 2001, I donated blood for the first time. It was also then that I realized that helping others was a particularly joyful thing. In 2006, after I participated in unpaid blood donation many times, I found that the strength of one person alone is not enough to treat the sick and save people. As a result, I went from being a blood donor to a gratuitous blood donor advocate, becoming one of the first members of the volunteer service team and serving as the head of the secretarial team. My team members and I used our rest time to go to the streets, rural areas, units, universities, and troops to publicize unpaid blood donation. Later, we promoted hematopoietic stem cell donation, and this is how my life-related volunteer work came about.
In March 2010, the mainland launched a pilot project of organ donation after the death of citizens. In August of that year, the relevant person in charge of the Jinhua Red Cross Society asked me if I would like to participate in professional training. It was the first time I had heard the term "organ donation," but I knew it was a life-saving thing. The text message after each blood donation tells me that the blood I have donated has helped a living life and made me respect life. So, I replied very firmly, "I do!" ”
The phrase "I do" made me a "life ferryman" connecting death and rebirth. Not a medical graduate, I heard a lot of nouns I had never heard before during that training, and I carefully wrote them down in my notebook and memorized them repeatedly.
After volunteering for organ donation, I began to pay attention to the publicity. Because of my outstanding work performance, I became the first batch of human organ donation coordinators in the country, and was the only volunteer coordinator among the five coordinators in Zhejiang Province at that time. Up to now, I have participated in the coordination of nearly 180 cases of organ donation and body (tissue) donation, which has given more than 300 people the opportunity to be reborn.
I remember that cold winter 12 years ago, a 10-year-old little angel donated organs to save 5 families, and his life was extended in another way. This is the first case of human organ donation in Jinhua and the second case of human organ donation in Zhejiang Province.
Organ donation refers to the voluntary, unpaid donation of well-functioning organs after a person's death to help those who are dying. This is a noble act that does not harm one's own interests, but can help others. Many organ transplanters I meet have two birthdays, one is the day of birth given by their parents and the other is the day of transplantation, and they give this day a thick name – "Day of Rebirth". As an Organ Donation Coordinator, I have the privilege of participating in the cause of organ donation, building a bridge of life between donors and recipients, and paying tribute to the sacred life.
Late one night last winter, I was awakened by a phone call in my sleep, and it turned out that an old man who had registered his donation had passed away, and I wanted to help him complete his wish to donate his body. I contacted the receiving unit and rushed to the hospital. Since there was no receiving unit in Jinhua, the recipients from other places would not arrive until the next day, so I guarded the donors in the ward with my family until noon the next day, when the donors were taken to the medical school car at noon the next day.
Scenes like this are the norm in my work, and although it is very hard, I have no regrets. Because I know that every time I run, I may take back one or more lives from the hands of the god of death, and may make one or more blind people see the sun shine again. The smallest donor I helped complete the body donation was a child who was only 15 days old, and the oldest was a 103-year-old anti-war veteran, and no matter how long or short they spent in this world, they all had a common name: donor. They have left a lot of love in the world, and I am willing to be their most loyal guardian.
Over the years, I can't remember how many families have been with life and death, how many times I have been in and out of the intensive care unit or even the funeral home, how many early mornings I have been running on the road to donation, how many times I have been rejected, although there are many hardships and grievances, but more is touching, which is also the motivation for me to insist on doing this.
One mother, who had not eaten a mouthful of food and drunk a sip of water in the days after her son's accident, ate a bowl of ravioli after signing the organ donation registration form. She said: "My son is still alive, I want to be well, I can't let him worry." These words are forever engraved in my heart.
I fell in love with what it was like to be a volunteer
Duzude (44) has been a volunteer since 2016
This is my sixth year as a volunteer. The first time I came into contact with volunteer work, I fell in love with this feeling— the joy of helping others solve difficulties, the sense of happiness of increasing awareness of the world, society, and myself, and the satisfaction of growing skills and wisdom.
I was the first volunteer in the Big Footprint Volunteer Service Team, and went into the community and nursing home with other volunteers to send love to the elderly and the disabled who needed help; I also went to the search and rescue team to find the lost elderly and children, and went to schools and villages to publicize first aid knowledge... The days of volunteering are busy and fulfilling.
Since last year, I have learned a lot about organ donation from the Organ and Hematopoietic Stem Cell Donation Volunteer Service Team of the Jinhua Red Cross Society. I realized the important role that organ donation work plays in the development of human medicine, so I began to go to various places to promote it.
During the epidemic period, I volunteered at various heart-warming service points to check the health codes and itinerary cards of the drivers of passing vehicles, and most of the drivers were very supportive and took the initiative to cooperate with our work. Sometimes, we also receive snacks and food from the public, which makes me feel very warm.
After becoming a volunteer, I was very rewarded. Slowly, I saw that the problem was no longer as superficial as before, and my family was pleased to see that my temper had changed drastically—the grumpy me was gone, and the calm me was there. I began to learn to think differently and communicate with people in a softer tone. Being a volunteer allows me to keep improving.
