Levan has won the award for the second time since being elected World Football of the Year in 2020, after being named World Footballer of the Year in 2020. In 2021, Levan played in 60 games in all competitions, contributing 69 goals and 11 assists; in the 2020-2021 season he broke the Bundesliga single-season scoring record, just becoming the second player in Bundesliga history to score more than 300 goals.

Midfielder Alexia Putillas, who plays for Barca women's football and the Spanish national team, was elected Best Female Athlete. Emma Hayes, who coached Chelsea women's football, and Tuchel, who coached Chelsea men's football, were named Best Women's Football Manager and Best Men's Football Manager respectively.
