Chen Yihan, born in October 1964, Sheyang, Jiangsu, MD, chief physician, cardiologist, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

According to public information, Chen Yihan received his bachelor's degree in medicine and master's degree in internal medicine from Nantong Medical College in 1987 and 1992, and graduated from Shanghai Second Medical University with a doctorate degree in internal medicine in 1996.

Since August 1987, he has served as the attending physician, deputy chief physician and chief physician of the Department of Cardiology in the Affiliated Hospital of Nantong Medical College and Ganquan Hospital affiliated to Shanghai Tiedao University (the predecessor of Shanghai Tongji Hospital).

In 2003, 39-year-old Chen Yihan discovered the pathogenic gene of human atrial fibrillation, identified some genetic and electrophysiological mechanisms of human atrial fibrillation, and published the results in the journal Science, which is considered to be a major breakthrough in the field of cardiology and medical genomics in China, a milestone in the field of atrial fibrillation research, and has won a place for the mainland in the field of international arrhythmia research. In this year, he became a professor and doctoral supervisor.

In 2004, he received a grant from the National Science Foundation for Outstanding Young Scholars, and in 2007, he was the head of the innovation team of the Ministry of Education.

In 2007, Chen Yihan served as the director of the Department of Cardiology of Tongji Hospital affiliated to Tongji University, and in December 2008, he also served as the vice dean of the School of Medicine of Tongji University.

In 2009, Chen Yihan was transferred to the Oriental Hospital Affiliated to Tongji University, and after that, he also served as the director of the Department of Pathology and Pathophysiology, the vice president of the Affiliated Oriental Hospital, the director of the Key Laboratory of Arrhythmias of the Ministry of Education (Tongji University), the director of the Department of Cardiac Medicine, the director of the Department of Cardiology, and the director of the Arrhythmia Diagnosis and Treatment Center.

In September 2012, Chen Yihan served as the chief scientist of the National 973 Program, and in the same year, he served as the head of the National Innovative Research Group.

In December 2015, he was elected an academician of the Faculty of Life Sciences and Medicine of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

In November 2016, he became the Director of the Department of Medicine and Life Sciences at Tongji University, and still holds the above position (bold part).

In December 2017, he became the vice president of Tongji University, and continued to hold the above positions (bold part) until this adjustment.

In his 35 years as a doctor, Chen Yihan has completed the transformation from a clinician to a medical scientist to a manager.

Low-key, good at doing basic research work

"Chen Yihan is low-key, rarely reported in the media, and he rarely appears in front of the camera." A senior medical media person revealed to the "think tank of the medical community".

Successfully captured the first pathogenic gene of human atrial fibrillation, Chen Yihan claimed that he embarked on the road of science, completely out of chance.

Chen Yihan once self-evaluated that when a doctor needs to "think, generalize, and reason", then he can make a diagnosis of the disease.

At the earliest outpatient clinic, he found that there were more and more patients with atrial fibrillation, with obvious genetic predisposition, and sometimes several people from a family came to see the patient; he came up with the idea, "Why not get some blood samples of patients with familial atrial fibrillation to study and try to see if something can be found."

Once, he happened to hear that 17 people in a family of more than 70 people had atrial fibrillation and took a train hard seat overnight to take samples. It took nearly a year to travel to most of China's countryside to collect samples and clinical data from several atrial fibrillation lineages and many control cases. However, the road to scientific research did not go as smoothly as expected, and after months of continuous struggle in the laboratory, he did not expect the perfect map.

After 3 years of defeat and repeated battles, in 2003, with the support and cooperation of his collaborators, he successfully captured the first pathogenic gene of atrial fibrillation in humans, and the results were published in the international top academic journal Science magazine.

"Once you find something valuable in your research, you don't stop." Since then, Chen Yihan has led the team to gallop in the field of human arrhythmia research, successively discovering a number of arrhythmia pathogenic genes in China, and revealing and explaining the occurrence mechanism of a number of arrhythmias, which is of great significance for the early diagnosis and treatment of diseases.

Today' Chen Yihan, based on basic research to solve clinical problems, actively promotes translational medicine, and makes important contributions to the rise of translational medicine research in Tongji.

The history of scientific research in established hospitals

In 1920, the industrialist Chen Guichun founded Pudong Hospital and served as its first president.

Wang Yiting, an industrialist who funded the Xinhai Revolution and twice served as chairman of the Shanghai General Chamber of Commerce, served as the second president of the academy. Du Yuesheng, a tycoon of the Youth Gang of the Republic of China, served as the third president of the hospital...

The century-old home was renamed to its current name in 1993.

Dongfang Hospital has founded a number of Shanghai First or China First:

It is the first western hospital in Pudong and even Shanghai to be founded by Chinese.

In 1980, the old dean Ma Longrui published the "Concept of Human Death", which was the first person in China to propose donating the remains to medical research.

In 1981, the first emergency department in the Shanghai medical system was established in Dongfang Hospital.

The "Shanghai Health Emergency Rescue Team" established by Dongfang Hospital in 2010 is the first batch of international emergency medical teams in the world and the first in China to pass the certification of the World Health Organization.

It has signed medical contracts with more than 60 overseas insurance companies and is the only Designated Hospital of French National Medical Insurance in China, serving nearly 40,000 foreign patients every year.

……

Dongfang Hospital officially became the Affiliated Hospital of Tongji University in 2001. Under the leadership of Liu Zhongmin, the 21st president, it was promoted to a top three hospital at the end of 2010, which accelerated the rapid development of the hospital's medical teaching and research level.

Today's Oriental Hospital has 1 hospital and 3 districts [(Lujiazui, Qiantan, Hudong (under construction)] three campuses, currently has 1780 beds, more than 3160 employees, and 3.44 million emergency visits per year.

Despite its growing volume, Dongfang Hospital aims to create a "public welfare, academic, and international" research hospital. As a clinical medical school affiliated to Tongji University Hospital and a number of medical schools, the hospital undertakes the education and teaching of undergraduate and graduate students, has three postdoctoral mobile stations of clinical medicine, biology and biomedical engineering, and trains nearly 1500 students in the hospital every year. By the end of 2021, a total of 1,096 longitudinal scientific research projects have been approved (52% of national projects) and a total of 930 million yuan in scientific research funds.

Among the nominations for scientific research competitiveness of Shanghai Top 3 Hospitals, Dongfang Hospital ranked 10th, the impact factor of SCI papers ranked 7th in Shanghai, the number of domestic invention patents authorized ranked 6th in the city, the domestic utility model patent authorization ranked 3rd in the city, and the patent transformation ranked 6th in the city.

"Medical think tank" observed that in Shanghai's large tertiary hospitals, the vice president of scientific research is not the only case, for example, Li Bin, president of Shanghai Dermatology Hospital (former vice president of Shanghai Yueyang Hospital who is mainly engaged in scientific research), after being transferred, he has focused on scientific research and business development, and Shanghai Dermatology Hospital has become the first hospital in China's hospital science and technology quantity (STEM) dermatology in 2020, and has ranked first in Shanghai's dermatology research results for two consecutive years, and its business volume has also been synchronously improved.

Started from the clinic, proficient in scientific research, and also served as the vice president of "world-class university construction university"... It is hoped that under the leadership of Chen Yihan, Shanghai Dongfang Hospital can promote clinical research with scientific research, create more diagnostic and treatment characteristics, and stand proudly in the East with the posture of a giant.
