Zhang Dai was a literary scholar in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, known as Tao'an, born in a family of eunuchs, young and intelligent, and his talent and works were a popular show.

"Self-made Epitaph" was written after the fall of the Ming Dynasty, when the country was broken and his family died, he went to the mountains to live in seclusion, recalled the prosperous life of the first half of his life, and wrote this epitaph for himself with a painful and self-deprecating mood.

When he looks back on the past twenty years, the happiness in those memories is fleeting.

The study of books is not successful, the study of swords is not successful, the study of festivals is not successful, the study of articles is not successful, the study of immortals and Buddhism, the study of agriculture and the study of gardens are not successful, and the people of the world call them the sons of the losers, for the waste, for the stubborn people, for the blunt xiucai, for the sleepy man, for the dead old charm.
