Due to increasing competition in the field of electric pickups, Tesla is improving some of the features and functions of its Cyberruck pickup truck to make a more attractive product, people familiar with the matter said. Tesla expects to start production of Cyberruck in the first quarter of 2023 and then gradually increase production. Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Tesla is the world's top electric car manufacturer, producing electric cars and SUVs, etc., but missed out on the pickup market. Pickup trucks are lucrative in the United States and very popular with consumers. Ford and Rivian, among others, are already ahead of Tesla in launching electric pickups.

Ford said earlier this month that it would nearly double its annual production capacity to 150,000 units before the F-150 Lightning electric pickup was officially launched this spring. On Jan. 14, Tesla shares fell 6.7 percent, Rivian shares fell 7.1 percent, and Ford shares rose 5.7 percent, and its market capitalization also exceeded $100 billion for the first time.

Tesla first released Cyberruck in 2019, having previously postponed production of the car from late 2021 to 2022. Last November, when asked by fans about Cyberteruck, Musk tweeted, "This year's supply chain is a nightmare, and this nightmare is not over!" Musk said he will provide an updated product roadmap on Tesla's earnings call on Jan. 26.

Tesla plans to produce Cyberteruck trucks at its Texas plant and expects to start production of Model Y cars early this year.
