The black-faced spoonbill is one of the most endangered birds in the world, known as the "giant panda of birds", and was included in the list of second-class protected animals under national key protection in 1989. On February 5, 2021, the black-faced spoonbill was included in the list of first-class protected animals of wild animals under national key protection.
The 2022 Hainan Wintering Waterbird Survey was conducted island-wide from January 7 to 9, with more than 60 survey team members divided into 10 teams to conduct the survey, covering 62 major waterbird habitats on Hainan Island. The survey, together with the national black-faced spoonbill and spoon-billed sandpiper, provides a scientific basis for the conservation of rare and endangered waterbirds. The results of this year's hainan wintering waterbird survey will be released at the commemoration of Hainan's International Wetlands Day on February 2.
In three days, the team recorded 145 black-faced spoonbills in Sibi Bay, Lingao Houshui Bay, Danzhou City, Haiwei Wetland in Changjiang County, Yingge Hai salt farm in Ledong County and Dongzhai Port in Haikou City, setting a record for the highest record since the simultaneous survey of black-faced spoonbills was carried out in Hainan in 2003, and the original record was 108 in 2020. It is worth noting that 7 black-faced spoonbills were recorded in Changjiang Haiwei National Wetland Park this year, which is the first time that black-faced spoonbills have appeared here for wintering.
In recent years, the population of black-faced spoonbills wintering in Hainan has been increasing, and more and more wintering lands have been increasing, which is the effect of strengthening the protection and restoration of wetlands in Hainan. (Duty Editor Zhong Ning Correspondent Lu Gang)
