At the end of 2021, we received a special New Year's gift – a spy photo of a brand new Rolls-Royce model. Unlike in the past, on this Rolls-Royce, which will still be named after a ghost, we will not find the internal combustion engine again.

Like most European car companies, Rolls-Royce announced its own transition timeline last year: by 2030, the world's most prestigious ultra-luxury brand will be fully electrified. CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös also unveiled plans for the first pure electric Rolls-Royce, called spectre, to be delivered to users by the end of 2023.

Spectre's Chinese titled "The Shining," is reminiscent of Kubrick's classic suspense thriller. However, this brand has always liked to use the name of the ghost, and the "flash" in this "Shining" has a little bit of electric shock. In fact, the Shining is not the earliest electric Rolls-Royce, the 102EX and the later 103EX that used phantom oil to change electricity in 2011 have actually shown the seemingly traditional British ambitions for the future technology.

Rolls-Royce unveiled a Preview of the Shining last year

Of course, the two experimental electric vehicles are not moving towards mass production. Last year, The Shining not only released a few preview images, but also began a road test with a total mileage of 2.5 million kilometers on the ground, in order to be foolproof in the first step towards electrification of the brand.

We can see more detail from the photos of the Shining Test Car obtained this time than the preview image. At first glance, the prototype on the flatbed transporter looks a lot like a Phantom, but that's about it, because the Shining is not only a pure electric car, but also a brand new model. Although using the same CLAR platform as the latest electric vehicles such as the BMW i4 and iX may be less difficult to develop, Rolls-Royce chose the "luxury architecture" modular platform of Gerst, Cullinan and the eighth generation phantom as the basis for this two-door coupe, which will continue to be used in other Rolls-Royce models in the future.

In this photo, we can see that the Shining will continue to use a folio "suicide door" (Rolls-Royce calls it a "carriage door"). Its roof is more Coupe-flavored than the Phantom, with more sloping lines and smaller side windows. The front bumper area is not overly camouflaged, revealing its design features. In addition, we can also see split headlights, daytime running lights on the top and headlights on the bottom, which is similar to several upcoming BMW models. The taillights are deceptive because there is a circle of bulges around the periphery of the visible part, and the true size should be larger than the exposed part.

BMW i7 spy photo

As a pure electric vehicle, the front suspension of the Shining is particularly long, because the "luxury architecture" is not a dedicated pure electric platform. A similar situation will be seen on the BMW i7, which uses the CLAR platform. So far, Rolls-Royce is still tight-lipped about the powertrain of this all-electric model, but it is believed that it will use the same power configuration as the BMW iX M60 that will be unveiled at CES, and the total power of the front and rear dual motors will be between 600 and 650 horsepower, and the torque may even be as high as 1100 Nm.

If all goes well, the Shining will be officially released in the first half of 2023 and deliveries will begin in the fourth quarter of that year.
