The founding emperor of the Southern Tang Dynasty, Li Fu (李昪), also spelled Zhenglun (正倫) and Pengnu (彭奴) in small characters, was born a lowly man and wandered around Haozhou and Sizhou since childhood. When he was six years old, his father Li Rong disappeared in the war, and he was taken to Haozhou by his uncle Li Qiu. In 895, Wu Taizu Yang Xingmi attacked Haozhou, found Pengnu during the war, and adopted him as his adopted son. However, Yang Xingmi's sons could not accept Peng Nu, so Yang Xingmi handed Peng Nu over to the minister Xu Wen to raise. After that, Peng Nu changed his name to Xu Zhiyu.
After Yang Xingmi's death, his son Yang Wo succeeded him as emissary of Huainan Jiedushi. However, Yang Wo liked to have fun, and his cronies always oppressed the old ministers of the YuanXun, causing the generals to feel uneasy in general. In the fourth year of Tianyou, Zhang Hao and Xu Wen launched a mutiny and took control of Yang Wo, who was in power. In the fifth year of Tianyou, Zhang Hao killed Yang Wo and made his brother Yang Long the emissary of Huainan Jiedushi. Soon after, Xu Wen beheaded Zhang Hao and established Yang Long as emperor, known as "Southern Wu" in history. Yang Longyan is known as Wu Gaozu.
Because Yang Longyan was supported by Xu Wen to the throne, the government was controlled by Xu Wen's father and son. Yang Longyan has a steady and obedient personality, and he does not show unfairness about the arrogance of Xu Wen's father and son, so Xu Wen did not harm him. But he was still depressed in his heart, so he indulged himself and died the next year. After Yang Longyan's death, Xu Wen made his brother Yang Pu the Duke of Danyang Commandery the Prince of Wu and changed his name to Yuan Shunyi. After Xu Wen's death, his adopted son Xu Zhihuan (徐知诰) succeeded him, tilting his power to the opposition and honoring Yang Pu as emperor.
With the gradual expansion of ambition, Xu Zhihuan was no longer satisfied with being a powerful courtier, he wanted to become emperor himself. In the third year of Wu Tianzuo, Emperor Yang Pu of Wu formally zen at Xu Zhihuan, Xu Zhihuan changed the name of the country to Qi, and the following year after declaring himself Li Tang, changed the name of the country to Tang, known in history as "Southern Tang", and he himself changed his name to Li Fu. After Li Fu became emperor, the Sun Emperor Yang Pu was moved to Runzhou, and Yang Pu became a Taoist monk. But even so, Li Fu did not let down his guard against Yang Pu and imprisoned him to death at Danyang Palace in December 938.
After Yang Pu's death, Li Fu moved all the descendants of the Yang clan to Hailing, sent heavy guards, and strictly forbade outsiders to enter.
