Talking about Mitsubishi Motors, at present, you can think of Orlander, Pajero, there are only a few models on sale in China, and sales have been very dismal.
However, in the 1990s, Mitsubishi was also popular in China, so to speak, at that time, there was basically no Chinese brand that did not use Mitsubishi engines.

Although the introduction of Mitsubishi engines at that time was to take their own needs, the technology was not advanced enough, but for Chinese brands that lacked engine technology accumulation, it was still a blessing in disguise, and it was with the support of Mitsubishi engines that some Chinese brands came to today.
Let's take a look at which popular models of Chinese brands have used Mitsubishi engines.
01

Chery Tiggo: Mitsubishi 4G63/4G64
Although Chery has gone downhill in recent years, in the early 2000s Chery is definitely the leader of Chinese brands, and its sales once overwhelmed Toyota, Honda, Nissan and other joint venture brands; and Tiggo launched in 2005 is a hot best-selling model, with a price close to the people, similar to the shape of Toyota RAV4, which is loved by domestic consumers.
Of course, this is also inseparable from the Mitsubishi engine code-named 4G63 it is equipped with, but this 4G63 is not the "red-headed god machine" on the Mitsubishi EVO.
Although the displacement is all 2.0L, the civilian version of the 4G63 is a naturally aspirated engine with a maximum power of only 129 horsepower, while the Mitsubishi Evo uses turbocharging technology and DOHC double overhead camshafts, and the maximum power reaches the 280 horsepower limit of the Japanese "Gentleman's Agreement" at that time.
The biggest advantage of this naturally aspirated engine is that the leather is durable and the failure rate is low, so it is favored by domestic automobile manufacturers, and the Zhonghua Junjie 2.0L and the Son of the Orient have been equipped with this engine.
However, the maximum power of 129 horsepower gradually could not meet the needs of consumers for power, and the 2.0T turbo engine codenamed 4G63S4T was also derived in the later period, with the maximum power increased to 190 horsepower and a peak torque of 250 Nm.
In the first two years, the very hot land wind "Aurora" and Baoshi "Tai" are equipped with this engine, even now there are still some Chinese brand models still using this 2.0T engine, such as Cheetah CS10, Southeast DX7, etc., Mitsubishi 4G63 series engine can be said to witness the development of Chinese brands.
02
Haval H6: Mitsubishi 4G63/4G69
You must not think that the national god car, haval H6, which has occupied the champion of the SUV sales ranking for many years, has also been equipped with Mitsubishi engines.
The 2.0-liter naturally aspirated engine on the 2011 Haval H6 is Mitsubishi's 4G63 series, while the 2012 model is upgraded to the latest 4G69 series engine.
This 2.4L naturally aspirated engine codenamed 4G69 can be seen as an upgraded version of the Mitsubishi 4G64, although it is still a single overhead camshaft, 16 valve design, but due to the use of MIVEC (valve timing electronic control system) technology, improve the intake efficiency of high-speed driving, so the power response at medium high speed is better than that of 4G64.
Moreover, the compression ratio of the 4G69 engine has reached 9.5, the maximum power is 118kW, and the peak torque is 235 Nm, and the actual power improvement is also more obvious.
The Haval H5 uses a simplified version of the 4G69 engine, code-named 4G69S4N, which has less MIVEC system than the Haval H6, and the engine power and torque are reduced, but the low twist comes earlier, which is more suitable for some pickup trucks and hardcore off-road vehicles.
To this day, there are still many domestic pickup trucks and commercial vehicles equipped with this engine, such as Futian Takumi E5, Jiangling Teshun, etc., which shows the great influence of Mitsubishi engine on Chinese brands.
03
Cheetah Black Kong: Mitsubishi 4G64
In the 90s of the last century, Cheetah Black King Kong was definitely the king of domestic hardcore off-road vehicles, in addition to the Mitsubishi engine, the shape is also the same as the second-generation Pajero V31/V33, which can be seen as the Changfeng version of the Mitsubishi Pajero.
The Mitsubishi 4G64 engine carried by Black King Kong was produced by Shenyang Aerospace Mitsubishi, although the technology of this engine was relatively backward at that time, but due to its high stability and cheap price, it had a very large installed capacity in China at that time, and it was the best choice for many domestic SUVs and gasoline pickups.
Mitsubishi 4G64 engine is also a single overhead camshaft, compared with the 4G69 engine in the high-speed driving at low air intake efficiency, the power performance is average, but it can output 201 Nm maximum torque at 2500rpm, low torque performance is good, very suitable for some hardcore off-road vehicles that do not pursue speed.
In addition to the Cheetah Black Diamond, the beijing jeep 2500, Chery Tiggo, Shuanghuan SCEO and other models that were popular at that time were equipped with this 2.4-liter naturally aspirated engine.
04
BYD F3: Mitsubishi 4G15/4G18
Today's BYD is the leader of China's new energy vehicles, but it was also plagued by the lack of engines at that time, even the once popular BYD F3 was equipped with 4G15/4G18 series engines from Mitsubishi, and it was not replaced by BYD's own BYD473QB engine until 2011.
Mitsubishi's 4G13, 4G15 and 4G18 series engines were imported by Dongan Mitsubishi and have displacements of 1.3L, 1.5L and 1.6L respectively. Small displacement engines are more suitable for small cars or cars, and around 2000, when SUVs were not yet emerging, these engines can be said to occupy half of the Chinese brand.
In addition to the BYD F3, popular models such as Zotye 2008, Zhonghua Junjie FRV, and Hafei Saibao have all been equipped with Mitsubishi's 4G1X series engines. Although the power is not strong, the maximum power of the 4G18 engine with the largest displacement is only 100 horsepower, but because it uses a pull-line throttle, the power response is relatively fast, and the front power feeling is still good, which is more suitable for driving in the urban area.
It's just that because it uses an Otto cycle, coupled with the design of a single overhead camshaft, there is no variable valve lift, and the fuel consumption performance is not too good. Of course, the advantage is that the leather is durable, the quality is stable, and this engine has a large amount, the accessories are cheap, and the maintenance cost in the later period is relatively low.
However, because these engine technologies are too backward, even inferior to some domestic engines, the power is relatively weak, there is not much room for upgrading, so now there are basically few models equipped.

With the continuous rise of Chinese brands, many automakers have now surpassed the old Mitsubishi engines, such as the Great Wall's 6Z30 3.0T engine, Chery's Kunpeng 2.0T engine, etc., but the contribution of Mitsubishi engine to the development of China's automobile industry is indelible.
Even in 2022, there are still some Chinese brands that lack independent research and development capabilities to use Mitsubishi engines. So, do you know which models are equipped with Mitsubishi engines (except Southeast Motors)? Welcome to leave a message below the article and discuss and communicate together.
