In fact, there were no eight hundred "eight hundred brave soldiers", in fact, there were less than four hundred people, and there is a saying that the "lone army" who was guarding the Sihang warehouse deliberately released this news in order to deter the Japanese army.
So why did hundreds of soldiers die in the Sihang warehouse? Naturally, there is a historical reason for it, when the Battle of Songhu was at the end of the period, the Nine-Power Pact Conference was about to be convened, and the Kuomintang pinned its hopes on the international community to sanction Japan.
Sun Yuanliang, the commander of the Eighty-eighth Division, and the famous "Flying General" proposed that the main force of the whole division should not be sacrificed, and that a reinforced battalion should be left to garrison. Therefore, the first battalion of the 524th Regiment was stationed at the Sihang Warehouse, a warehouse building on the north bank of the Suzhou River and the northwest corner of the Tibet Road Bridge, and Xie Jinyuan, who was then the deputy commander of the 524th Regiment, was the supreme commander.
They wanted to fight against the Third Division of the Japanese Ace Army, but the Sihang warehouse was in a special location, close to the British and French concessions, and there were large gas bags nearby, so the Japanese did not dare to bomb and shell on a large scale.
From October 26 to 30, 1937, the soldiers of the Sihang Warehouse fought bloodily with the Japanese army for four days and four nights, which fully demonstrated the national spirit of the Chinese soldiers and attracted the attention of all parties, and representatives of Britain, the United States and other countries submitted a petition to the National Government, hoping to stop the fighting for "humanitarian reasons".
After thinking about it again, Mr. Jiang thought that the initial goal had been achieved, so he ordered the evacuation of the warehouse, and the Japanese army believed that the warehouse defenders had thousands of people, so they agreed to withdraw, xie Jinyuan although unwilling, but still obeyed the withdrawal order.
According to the original plan, Xie Jinyuan and others were going to join the 88th Division, but Matsui Ishigen, who was the commander of the Japanese Shanghai Dispatch Army, was unwilling to spare this group of Chinese fighters who insisted on staying in the Sihang warehouse and severely defeated the Japanese army, and coerced the public concession authorities to "trap" the warehouse defenders, and the concession authorities followed the japanese army's wishes.
After entering the shelter, the defenders of these warehouses were unloaded by the British, their personal freedom was restricted, and they had to live in a very poor environment, and began a 4-year concentration camp-like solitary life. At that time, Xie Jinyuan's soldiers and other fighters were in the same mood, full of indignation and helplessness, but they were still concerned about the country.
During this period, Xie Jinyuan wrote the "Xie Jinyuan Diary" to record his life in detail.
In April 1941, the Wang puppet regime wanted to lure Xie Jinyuan, and the conditions offered were very tempting, but Xie Jinyuan sternly refused, Xie Jinyuan had the ambition to serve the country since he was a child, and how could he be willing to become a traitor? Because Xie Jinyuan always refused to surrender to the Japanese, the awe-inspiring righteousness he showed was also in stark contrast to the Japanese, and in the end, the Japanese were moved to kill, and they bribed four rebels.
In the early morning of April 24 of the same year, Xie Jinyuan, as usual, led the officers and soldiers to exercise early, but unfortunately was assassinated, at the age of 37, all walks of life in Shanghai learned of this news and mourned, the next day, Xie Jinyuan's memorial service was held in Shanghai, and 300,000 people went to mourn.
The ancient historian Sima Qian once said: "Man is inherently dead, or heavier than Mount Tai, or lighter than Hong Mao." Although Xie Jinyuan is a tragic hero, the national spirit and patriotic feelings he showed will always exist in the world and will never be forgotten.
