In 1930, a 17-year-old young man chose to join the Red Army without his mother. This young man who aspired to serve the country was named Ding Qiusheng, a native of Xiangxiang, Hunan, who was born in a poor family. He has not had a father since he was a child, and his mother has raised him with hard work, and the two are dependent on each other. When Ding Qiusheng was 7 years old, his mother took him to Anyuan to beg for food, and he stayed in Anyuan.

In order to reduce the burden on his mother, Ding Qiusheng became a coal digger at the age of 11 and was exploited by the mine owners. Ding Qiusheng hated the bullies and inferior gentry, fed up with their oppression, and hoped to find a bright path in life. When he was 17 years old, a chief came to the Anyuan Coal Mine to propagate revolutionary ideas to the workers' comrades.

Hearing the words of the chief, Ding Qiusheng was so enlightened that he identified the revolutionary road and was determined to join the revolution. Back at home, Ding Qiusheng said to his mother: "Mother, only revolution can enable poor people like us to live a good life." Ding Qiusheng's mother loved her son as fate, and when she heard that her son was going to join the army and fight, she was reluctant in her heart.

The mother burst into tears, resolutely refused to let her son join the army, wanted to keep her son by her side, and locked her son in the house. Ding Qiusheng had to "lie" for the sake of his mother's happiness and said, "Mother, you can rest assured, I will listen to you and will not join the Red Army." His mother released Ding Qiusheng, and soon after, Ding Qiusheng left home and signed up for the Red Army.

By the time of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, Ding Qiusheng had already served as a regiment-level cadre, and he wrote to his hometown to inquire whether his mother was healthy or not. Unexpectedly, I really got in touch with my mother, and my mother wrote back to my son and instructed my son: "Baby, you fight well, and your mother is in good health?" Rest assured. After Ding Qiusheng received the letter from his mother, he burst into tears with excitement and read it more than a dozen times in a row.

Since then, as long as he has time, Ding Qiusheng will write a letter to his mother and send some of his allowances with the letter, so that the old mother can take good care of herself. But in 1944, after Ding Qiu was born, his mother never wrote back. Ding Qiusheng thought that the Japanese puppet army had strengthened the blockade against the Japanese base area, and the letters could not enter, and he and his mother lost contact.

In 1949, Ding Qiusheng, who was the political commissar of the 22nd Army of the 3rd Field Army, heard that his hometown had been liberated, so he sent someone to inquire about his mother. Unfortunately, the comrades in his hometown did not reply for a long time, and Ding Qiusheng wanted to return to his hometown to visit his relatives, because he was busy with work and could not take time. Soon after, bad news came back from his hometown that Ding Qiusheng's mother had died of illness in 1944.

It turned out that my mother did not reply to the letter that year because she was seriously ill. She missed her son for becoming ill, died of illness, and did not see her son when she was dying. Ding Qiusheng heard the bad news and shut himself in the room, tears wetting his pillow. This famous warrior was loyal to the country, but he failed to fulfill his filial piety for his mother, leaving him with endless regrets.

In 1954, on the tenth anniversary of his mother's death, Ding Qiusheng wrote a commemorative article called "Commemorating Mother". He recalled the bits and pieces of his childhood, expressed his gratitude to his mother, and his guilt as a son.
