Popular science | "F1" on the ice: snowmobiles

There are still 26 days to go before the opening of the Beijing Winter Olympics, and the popular science project brought to you today is - snowmobile!

Snowmobiling was adopted as an official sport at the first Winter Olympics. The Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics bobsleigh event will be held at the National Bobsleigh Center in Yanqing, where a total of four gold medals will be awarded.

The track used by the bobsleigh is the same as that of the steel frame bobsleigh and bobsleigh, with a length of 1200-1650 meters and a drop of between 100 meters and 150 meters.

The body of the bobsleigh is made of steel and high-tech materials such as fiberglass or carbon fiber, and the body complex should be aerodynamic. The helmsman drives the snowmobile through a two-handle-controlled pulley system inside the snowmobile, while the brakes are mounted at the rear of the snowmobile. The rules have requirements for both the body and the weight of the athletes, and insufficient weight can be used to counterweight the body.

The average speed of the snowmobile is around 100 km/h, with a maximum of 160 km/h. Speeding at high speed is the biggest attraction of the snowmobile.
