Exquisite craftsmanship has brought the Wudangzhao cultural relics back to life

At the beginning of 2021, the restoration of a number of movable cultural relics with serious damage in the history of Wudangzhao was highly valued by the municipal party committee and the municipal government, and the cultural relics department decided to first carry out rescue restoration of 77 bronze artifacts and 25 thangkas, including a gold craft mandala from the palace and a 1.7-meter-high statue of Shengle King Kong.

"This batch of cultural relics was seriously damaged during the 'Cultural Revolution', none of them are not deformed or distorted, which is very sad, this time in response to the requirements of the municipal party committee and the municipal government for the protection of cultural relics, the restoration of these cultural relics is to let them regain their new life." The director of the Wudangzhao Comprehensive Security Center, Rooteggen, introduced.

The restoration of cultural relics is a highly professional project, so Wudang has hired a professional team - the team of cultural relics restoration expert Xu Zhengxiong. From the summer of 2021 until December, the technicians used exquisite skills and professional techniques to carry out "major surgery" on these cultural relics for up to 7 months, repairing 102 cultural relics one by one to fill in the gaps, restoring them to their original state, repairing the old as old, and making these cultural relics glow again.

The restoration of the mandala was shaped using innovative hydraulics and local bonding with rubber water. The mandala is divided into three layers, one layer is missing a lot, it needs to be supplemented, first do molding, and then use the method of engraving for repair, then polishing and polishing, color cleaning, welding the base of the second layer of the mandala with welding technology, using painting technology, drawing the ornament with an iron pen, there are four colors on the mandala, the pattern of the painting on the top, reinforced with paint, reinforced after reinforcement. Xiao Juntao, head of the cultural relics restoration project, introduced: "The tools for repairing cultural relics are exquisite, and our team has made more than 40 sticky pens and supplementary shelves according to the characteristics of this batch of cultural relics. There are more patterns on cultural relics, and different sticky pens are required to do each pattern in order to restore the original pattern of cultural relics. ”

The Katsuraku King Kong is repaired using engraving techniques, and the copper plate is placed on top of it to draw the pattern, and then engraved. Due to the serious damage, there are more materials that need to be replenished, and the restorers found that the raw material was copper according to the analysis of the residual parts, so they cut out different copper materials to repair the Buddha statue.

There are stains on the thangka and the surrounding interlining is rotten and needs to be cleaned first. There is a crack in the thangka, and the restoration technician attaches a piece of gauze to the back, which is replaced according to the original color texture, and the replacement cloth is an old cloth customized in Sichuan and Yunnan, and the style color is consistent with the original.

Qing painting enamel clocks are royal rewards, technicians in the repair process consulted the director of the Palace Museum Clock Department Mr. Wang Jin, Mr. Wang provided a lot of professional support and restoration suggestions for the repair of clocks and watches. According to Mr. Wang, the Forbidden City has collected hundreds of clocks and watches, and the Qing painting enamel clocks and them are different, not even similar styles, so this clock has a very high collection value.

"This cultural relics restoration, following the concept of cultural relics protection and restoration, integrates modern science and technology into traditional restoration techniques, improves the scientific nature of protection and restoration, and at the same time, the restoration team also gives suggestions for cultural relics protection so that cultural relics can be scientifically preserved and utilized for a long time." The management of these cultural relics is relatively standardized, and a comprehensive and detailed cultural relics status, disease investigation and corresponding scientific analysis and testing have been carried out. This protection and repair task achieved the expected goal. Professor Chen Jianjian of the School of Archaeology of Peking University commented.

This batch of precious cultural relics has distinct characteristics of multi-ethnic cultural integration, carries a large amount of historical information, and has re-revealed its dignified and long-term unique cultural charm after rescue restoration. At present, the newly restored cultural relics have been "settled" in the Wudangzhao Treasure Museum and will soon meet with tourists.
