Sanjie Ben, a native of Tu nationality, was born in 1966 in Wutun Village, Tongren County, Qinghai Province. Since the age of 8, he studied thangka, and at the age of 14, he formally worshipped the famous thangka artist Jianmucuo as his teacher, and repaired more than 100 murals in Longwu Temple, Xunhua Wendu Temple, Tsongkhapa's birthplace, Tibet and other temples. After decades of painstaking study, he learned from others, on the basis of inheriting the unique traditional skills of Regong art, absorbing a variety of foreign artistic elements, integrating the expression techniques of other painting schools, forming an atmospheric and unique artistic style, creating a large number of classic works, outstanding achievements, famous in the painting world, and becoming the most pioneering and influential figure in Chinese thangka painting.

In 2017, Sanjie Ben painted a 56-meter giant thangka "The Tenth Panchen Lama" at the Guangdong Provincial People's Fair and won the gold medal, and in the same year, he won two world records issued by the World Records Association (the world's longest thangka, the most characters), and in February 2018, Sanjie Ben won the medal of "World Peace Culture Ambassador" at the United Nations headquarters in New York, USA. In February 2019, Sanjay Benthangka's works "Five Hundred Arhats" and "Three Lords" were permanently collected by the National Museum. In 2021, he was hired as the executive director of the Thangka Professional Committee of the Chinese People's Association.
