"The Relics of The Continuation of zhenling" is written by Tang Renliu, which records the anecdotes of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang, which is a miscellaneous history of the nature of a novel in the Tang Dynasty and has a very high historical value. Sima Guang used many of them in compiling the Zizhi Tongjian, especially in the August "Examination Of the Thirteenth Year of the Great Middle School" in volume 249, which quoted the "Testament of the Continuation of zhenling" about Tang Xuanzong's killing of Yuenu, which shows that this matter is not false.
An innocent beautiful woman who was sent as a gift, Tang Xuanzong loved it, slept and slept, even if he suddenly didn't want it, he could send this woman back to his hometown like the "five hundred women who left the palace" ("New Book of Tang") at the beginning of his reign, or leave her in the cold, why did he have to put her to death? According to the author's analysis, there are three reasons.
First, Tang Xuanzong was a more thoughtful monarch who reflected on the Tang Dynasty's rise and fall, and came to the conclusion that beauty is a disaster. He did not find the reason from the feudal monarch himself, but blamed the fall of the Tang Dynasty on Yang Guifei, believing that Yang Guifei was the fuse that triggered the "Anshi Rebellion", and the Yue woman beside him was no different from the real version of Yang Guifei. Second, after the middle of the Tang Dynasty, the country's power declined, and the rulers, proceeding from maintaining and consolidating the feudal ruling order, actively advocated Confucianism and advocated women's observance of chastity, as did Tang Xuanzong. After ascending the throne, Tang Xuanzong denied all the four emperors of Mu, Jing, Wen, and Wu in front of him, and preferred to Emperor Wuzong's Wang Cairen "Jiaqi Festival, Gifting Concubines" (New Book of Tang), and the reason for this was that Wang Cairen took the initiative to request a martyrdom for Tang Wuzong, and was a rare martyr woman. For the matter of women keeping the festival, Tang Xuanzong also issued a special edict that "husband and wife, at the end of the indoctrination, their princesses and county lords have children and are widowed, and they must not remarry" (New Book of Tang). In this environment of advocating chastity, if Tang Xuanzong sent the Yue daughter out of the palace, he was afraid that the daughter would remarry, and he was afraid that he would wear a green hat and ruin his reputation, so he simply killed her.
Third, and the most important reason, Tang Xuanzong's killing of Yue women should be a kind of mannerism, a performance. The author believes that Tang Xuanzong's move is not simply worried about his indulgence in sound and color and misleading state affairs, but in fact, by killing the beautiful woman, he is telling his subjects that he is not absurd, not greedy, not tempted by female sex, and I am not rare in such a beautiful woman, and I li Chen still cherishes other women? To put it bluntly, Tang Xuanzong used the blood and life of the Yue women to cover up her ugly reputation of greed, in order to win the praise and reputation of her dedication to governance and not being moved by the female color. It is the nature of men to be lustful, and Tang Xuanzong endured pain and cut love and poisoned innocent beautiful women, which not only showed the extreme despotism, selfishness, cruelty and narrowness of the imperial power and male power, but also explained Tang Xuanzong's contradictions, confusion and helplessness on the issue of lust.
In fact, Tang Xuanzong was a very greedy and absurd emperor, which was slightly evident from his lifelong non-establishment of an empress and his wanton favor of the harem. The aphrodisiac brought pleasure to Tang Xuanzong and also brought him pain. In order to be able to live forever, Tang Xuanzong summoned the Daoist priest Xuanyuanji to Beijing for questioning in the first month of the twelfth year of the middle school (858), and the answer he got was "thorough sound and color" (Old Book of Tang), that is, the end of the joy of sound and color, but Tang Xuanzong did not care. In the first month of the following year (859), Tang Xuanzong, who had been tortured by beauty and aphrodisiacs, seemed to wake up and announce that he would once again "release the palace people" (New Book of Tang), but it was too late. In August of the same year, Emperor Xuanzong of Tang, known as "Little Taizong", was "gangrened on his back" (Zizhi Tongjian) because of his abuse of aphrodisiacs, and finally died at the age of 50.
