Reinvent yourself by creating hope – based on the Pandora myth

1,

According to Hesiod's Genealogy, when Prometheus, the titan god, once again deceived the gods and stole the fire to humans, Zeus, seeking to punish humans more effectively, decided to give them an unfortunate gift that they were all happy about and that led to bad luck, at the cost of obtaining the fire.

So Zeus ordered Hephaestus, the god of blacksmiths, to create the first woman. The goddesses gave her many of their qualities – female craftsmanship and weaving skills, charm, charm, beauty, fragrance, as well as clothes and jewelry. But there are other unwelcome gifts, such as Aphrodite, which charms her at the same time as giving her annoying desires and weary worries. Hermes gave her a dog's shameless and deceitful nature, putting lies, sermons, and a cunning heart in her chest.

The gods called this woman Pandora, meaning that all the gods on mount Olympus had given her a gift, a scourge of mankind and an absolutely inescapable trap. As a prophet and foresight, Prometheus knew the dangers of the gift, and he refused, and instructed his brother Epimetheus, a hindsighter, never to accept any gift given to him by Zeus of Olympus, and to return when it was sent, lest it become a possible scourge for mankind. But the hindsighter did not follow his instructions and accepted the gift, Pandora.

According to Hesiod, Pandora is the origin of human women, bringing misfortune to mortals who have died, because when they live with their husbands, they can only be rich together, and cannot live together in hateful poverty.

However, although Pandora is described as having the bad qualities of lying and cheating, she is not only charming, elegant and beautiful, but also highly skilled, and Athena has given her the skills of a woman and weaving. Even the gods were fascinated when they saw her.

Moreover, Hesiod had to willingly admit that a satisfactory wife would save the man from the desolation of his lonely old age, guarantee that his wealth would pass on to his descendants after his death, and that his distant relatives would not divide his inheritance. Even Hesiod, though deliberately invoking the cunning and greedy nature of dogs to describe Pandora's bad qualities, had to imply that women were the loveliest and most sincere of all life, men's best friends.

Of course, the most terrible thing is that the gods gave Pandora an earthen pot as a dowry. When she opened the earthen pot, what flew out of it was painful illness, annoyance, and countless troubles.

In the Hersiod version of Pandora's mythology, Pandora and her earthen pot are a complete disaster. But with a careful reading, we are still able to reveal the ambiguity of Pandora's nature as a gift.

First of all, this tragic event was caused by the gift of Prosseus's tinder, which in itself is a great boon to mankind.

But perhaps most importantly, although Hesiod complained that Pandora had unleashed all the human diseases in the earthen pot, she should be thanked for saving our greatest treasure. Only Hope remained in the unbreakable belly of the bottle under the bottleneck and failed to fly out, because pandora covered the earthen pot before Hope could fly out of the bottle. Hesiod insisted that hope was a gift from god. However, he also admitted that Pandora never saw hope. Hersiod thought it was because she had re-capped the earthen pot and sealed hope in it.

In fact, this myth has a more real meaning:

Hope never placed in the gifts of earthen pots placed by those gods. Rather, hope is pandora's gift to herself, compensation for her own blind behavior. It was her release of the disease that necessitated hope, and it was she who had reason to imagine that she had captured the hope she needed now. It is the existence of hope that requires hope to exist. Hope, like love, is an alchemy that enables something to arise from nothingness. Before she hit the earthen pot, Pandora was nothing more than an object, a living doll made by the gods, used as a passive tool of destruction. And by creating hope, Pandora recreates itself and becomes a positive subject.

As Lacan comforts us, without tears, the eyes are blind. Desire is created by castration, love is created by loneliness, subjectivity is created by objectivity, law is created by inequality, perfect ideals are created by imperfect reality, and in the final analysis, hope is created by suffering.

4,

How we should go about hope is a question. But two things are certain: one is that in order to receive the most precious gift, hope, it is necessary for us to experience suffering first, and it is suffering that makes hope necessary. Second, we can recreate ourselves by creating hope and become a positive subject and active.
