Foreign media: Japan's new car sales fell by 3% last year, hitting a ten-year low

According to Japan's Kyodo Network, Japan's domestic new car sales (including mini cars) in 2021 will be 4448340, down 3.3% from the previous year and down for three consecutive years. This includes a global shortage of semiconductors, difficulties in sourcing parts due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Southeast Asia, and sales volumes at the lowest level in the decade since 2011.

The report mentioned that on January 5, the Japan Automobile Dealers Association Federation and the National Federation of Mini Vehicle Associations released the above data. The 2020 pandemic led to sales as low as about 4.6 million units, with further declines in 2021. In addition to the shortage of semiconductors, the epidemic in Southeast Asia has led to a stagnation in the procurement of parts, and the factories of various manufacturers have had to stop production and other production.

The report quoted the Mini Car Association as saying that the shortage of semiconductors and the continuous stagnation of purchasing parts from overseas make it difficult to predict how long the impact on sales will last.

According to reports, the data shows that cars other than mini cars (registered vehicles) sold 2795818 units, a decrease of 2.9%. Toyota Motor's global production from September to October was about 30% to 40% lower than originally planned, and sales fell by 2.4%; Honda's domestic production from August to September was about 60% lower than originally planned, and sales fell by 6.6%. Domestic new vehicle sales in Japan in December 2021 were 336442 units, down 11.4% year-on-year. (Zhongxin Jingwei APP)
