Prototype batteries from North American startups have been tested with a thousand kilometers of range to amaze most electric vehicle peers

Financial Associated Press (Shanghai, editor Zhao Hao) news, local time on Wednesday (January 5), just two years of battery technology startup Our Next Energy (ONE) announced that the company's "Gemini 001" prototype battery can provide power to travel 752 miles (about 1210 km / km) when fully charged, this data was verified in December tests.

ONE, based in Michigan, said on its official website that the company modified a 203.7 kWh experimental battery pack with an energy density of 416 watt hours / liter for the Tesla Model S. In road tests conducted in December, the Model S traveled 882 miles at 55 mph.

The result is clearly a surprise, as the battery already has nearly twice as long as most existing electric vehicles. According to statistics, the maximum range of the Lucid Air is just over 500 miles, while the Tesla Model S originally had a range of 396 miles.

ONE founder and CEO Mujeeb Ijaz said in an interview that the company aims to start producing battery packs that offer similar endurance by the end of 2023.

"We plan to manufacture (batteries) in North America, and we believe we can do that economically. What currently prevents most consumers from buying an electric car is range anxiety, and we want to eliminate a little bit to accelerate the popularity of electric vehicles. ”

ONE is focused on developing advanced long-range batteries using safer, more sustainable materials, while the company is committed to packing more energy into smaller, cheaper batteries.

According to the work experience shown LinkedIn, Ijaz, who has 30 years of industry experience, was an executive at Apple and A123 Systems. A123 Systems is an American company specializing in the development and production of lithium-ion batteries and energy storage systems, Ijaz served as Chief Technology Officer during his tenure, and at Apple he served as Senior Director of Special Projects, where he was responsible for energy storage-related businesses.

For the company's Gemini batteries, Ijaz said, "We need to reduce our dependence on nickel and cobalt without giving up energy density." Our goal is to reinvent battery chemistry and battery structure to provide at least 750 miles of power between charges. ”

Gemini batteries rely on a model known as "dual batteries," which use cathodes free of cobalt and nickel, and a second set of high-energy battery packs can charge the first set, which doubles the vehicle's range to 750 miles.

Ijaz emphasizes, "If you put that much energy in the car, you can meet any of the customer's requirements — a round-trip trip from Detroit to Chicago, or pulling a trailer." ”

Ijaz revealed that ONE chose the Model S to test its prototype battery, not only because it has fairly high efficiency, but also provides enough space to accommodate ONE's battery.

It is worth mentioning that in the past 10 years, ONE has raised $25 million in series A financing, led by Breakthrough Energy Ventures (BEV), a cleantech fund owned by Bill Gates, and invested by German auto giant BMW.
