Very unspiritual, but very mental: The Japanese 918 war criminals, pretending to be crazy, escaped trial and were released

In modern national laws, a large number of protective measures have been established for some special groups of people, reducing the punishment suffered by such people after committing crimes, including children, pregnant women, mentally ill patients and so on.

Inevitably, a large number of people will specifically use these provisions to break the law or to escape responsibility – this is one of the biggest uses of "acute transient mental disorder" at present. Instigating young children, hiring pregnant women to participate in theft, fraud, drug trafficking, and even the deliberate intention of female terrorists to become pregnant before a terrorist attack is repeated in societies.

Decades ago, one of Japan's most notorious war criminals, the mastermind of the 918 Incident, Shumei Okawa, escaped trial and punishment from the Far East Military Tribunal by pretending to be crazy and foolish, disguised as a mental illness.

This person was a key figure in the rise and spread of fascist ideas in Japan, known as the "father of Japanese fascism"; he emphasized and advocated a high degree of centralized control of the state in politics and economy, that is, "controlling the economy". His role in Japanese fascism was not only at the theoretical level, but also the key source and promoter of a series of Japanese aggressive actions at the decision-making and practical implementation levels. In his early years, Because he was responsible for translating German works of the Japanese military department, Ōkawa Shumei was able to get to know a large number of middle and high-ranking military personnel, which provided a channel for him to form a close relationship with military and political leaders.

At that time, Okawa Shumei constantly participated in and promoted a large number of military personnel struggles and political conspiracies, including the March Incident in 1931, the October Incident, the May 15 Incident in 1932, and so on. And these events were all attempts by the fascists of the Japanese army to constantly gain state power.

For example, the March incident was when fascist soldiers tried to overthrow the Japanese regime at that time and set up a cabinet of "national transformation" by establishing Rikugo Ugaki Ichisei. Shumei Okawa took on the task of persuading and impressing Ugaki Kazunari as a lobbyist for these fascist soldiers as the "leader of the national transformation movement.".

With his high degree of activity in the Japanese military and political circles, he even received the title of "Showa Oshioshidaira Hachiro"; he not only became a close confidant and think tank of some Japanese political leaders, but also a spiritual idol that many japanese middle- and lower-level fascist military elements at that time greatly worshipped.

The most critical historical turning point of Japan's invasion of China, the 918 Incident, was deeply involved in planning and promoting the japanese military together with the Japanese military in his capacity as chairman of the East Asian Economic Survey Bureau. In the course of the post-war trial, in order to save his life; Shumei Okawa continued to disguise various symptoms of insanity, including nakedness and loud noises; the most ridiculous plot was that he continued to hit Hideki Tojo on the head, slapped Hideki Tojo, and shouted to kill Tojo.

What is unacceptable is that his tricks have actually passed the certification of medical experts formulated by the Far Eastern Tribunal. His trial was suspended. Mei Ruxuan, the Chinese judge involved in the trial, has commented angrily on the matter, calling it a mockery of law and justice. The day after the dissolution of the International Military Tribunal for the Far East, Shumei Okawa was released as a mentally ill person.

After his release, the man recovered from his "illness" and lived until 1957 (born 1886). Before his death, he personally admitted to the reporter who interviewed him that all the mental symptoms during his trial at the Far Eastern Military Tribunal were all fake.
