Tesla recalled 356,000 Model3s in the United States due to a defective rearview camera

Webmaster's House (ChinaZ.com) December 31 News: Tesla is recalling more than 356,000 Model 3 cars in the United States because owners may experience potential problems with the rearview camera getting damaged when closing the trunk, which can cause the camera to malfunction.

According to the safety recall report issued by the US transportation regulator NHTSA, the recall applies to 356309 vehicles. The document notes that only 1 percent of the recalled vehicles are expected to be defective. These Model3 cars are manufactured from July 15, 2017 to September 30, 2020.

NHTSA describes the defect as follows: "The Model 3 trunk harness is equipped with solid coaxial wires that provide a rearview camera signal for seeing on the centre display. Over time, the repeated opening and closing of the luggage compartment lid can lead to excessive wear of the coaxial cable. If wear causes the core of the coaxial cable to separate, the feed of the rearview camera is not visible on the centre display."

The agency said excessive damage to the coaxial cable could render the rearview camera unusable. This risk may affect the driver's rearview and increase the risk of collision.

The recall decision was made on December 14 after the investigation ended on December 10. NHTSA observed 2,301 warranty claims and 601 field reports related to this failure between October 2017 and December 2021. This is the third recall of the Model 3 in 2021, the first two of which were related to seat belt and brake caliper bolt issues.
