Leichtman Research Group found that the largest pay-TV provider in the U.S., which accounts for 93 percent of the market, lost about 650,000 video users in the third quarter of 2021, compared to about 90,000 in the third quarter of 2020.
Currently, the largest pay-TV provider has about 77 million subscribers, the top 7 cable companies have 41.9 million video subscribers, other traditional pay-TV services have more than 27.5 million subscribers, and the largest virtual multi-channel video program publisher (vMVPD) has 7.5 million subscribers to its pay-TV service.
Key findings for the quarter include:
In the third quarter of 2021, the top cable providers lost about 700,000 online subscribers, compared to about 380,000 in the third quarter of 2020.
Other traditional pay-TV services lost about 635,000 users in the third quarter of 2021, compared to about 780,000 users in the third quarter of 2020.
Top vMVPDs added about 680,000 subscribers in the third quarter of 2021, compared to an increase of approximately 1.07 million subscribers in the third quarter of 2020.
