The Instagram boss said the company will "rethink Insta" in 2022

Instagram boss Adam Mosseri vowed on Tuesday local time that the social app would "rethink what Instagram is" in 2022. In a video posted on Twitter, Mosseri said that in the new year, Instagram will focus on improving transparency and other goals.

But he didn't directly talk about any scandals that have rocked Instagram and parent company Meta (formerly Facebook) over the past year.

"We're thinking about who we are, what our values are and what kind of change we want to influence in the world," Mosseri said in the video.

In 2021, Instagram was slammed by a growing scandal, including allegations that it ignored the scope of its toxicity to many teen users. In September, the Wall Street Journal quoted Instagram and Facebook's own internal research reports as saying facebook was well aware of the harm Instagram does to teens, especially to the mental health of teenage girls. The report, along with others, sparked multiple congressional hearings on Instagram and other social apps, including one in which Mosseri was summoned to testify. Instagram said the magazine misrepresented the purpose and results of the study on teens, and that claims that Instagram was toxic were inaccurate.

On Tuesday, Mosseri said the company's goals for 2022 include: integrating all of Instagram's video sharing efforts around Reels, a product that competes with TikTok; embracing private messaging further; and improving the way Instagram creators make a living on the app.

Mosseri did not respond directly to the criticism, saying Instagram would work on more personal control and expanded transparency. "We think that if people are going to make Instagram what they want it to be or what works best for them, they have to understand how Instagram works," Mosseri said.
