"Money can't be earned, isn't it empty-handed when you first hit the world?" Besides, when the country is in trouble, what is the use of talking about money? The person who said this sentence was Du Yuesheng, a big man in the Shanghai Youth Gang. In "Eight Hundred", there is a shot of a rickshaw flashing by, and the person sitting in the rickshaw is generally believed to be Du Yuesheng.

Du Yuesheng was a legend on the beach at that time. The world knows that he is a business genius, the leader of the underworld, but few people know that he also did his best to defend the land he loved when Shanghai was invaded.

Du Yuesheng, who flashed by "Eight Hundred", once wanted to rescue Xie Jinyuan and the defenders, why was he rejected?

With all our strength, we will go to the country together

Du Yuesheng was born in 1888 in Chuansha Hall, Jiangsu Province, and is now the Pudong New Area of Shanghai. His original name was Du Yuesheng, and he was later renamed Yong (镛) due to Zhang Taiyan's suggestion, so he was du Yuesheng (杜月笙). When his parents died one after another at a young age, Du Yuesheng was raised by his stepmother and uncle Shang Qingguo. At the age of 14, he entered the Shanghai Sixteen Shops as an apprentice in the fruit shop, and later entered the Golden Rong Mansion, which was then the leader of the Green Gang in Shanghai.

In August 1937, the Battle of Songhu broke out, as a well-known figure in Shanghai Beach at that time, Du Yuesheng did not take the opportunity to escape, joined the Shanghai Anti-Enemy Rescue Association from all walks of life, and served as the director of the preparatory committee. In order to cover the westward retreat of 100,000 troops, Xie Jinyuan was ordered by Sun Yuanliang to stay in the Sihang warehouse and continue to hold. In order to reassure Xie Jinyuan to resist the enemy, Sun Yuanliang asked Du Yuesheng to escort Xie Jinyuan's wife and children to Guangdong. Although the escort did not succeed, Du Yuesheng's desire to help the War of Resistance was real. This also fully shows that in the face of national peril, he always put the national righteousness in the forefront. The defense of the Sihang Warehouse was very fierce, and the Japanese army carried out one attack after another to capture the Sihang Warehouse.

However, the defenders of the Sixing Warehouse, relying on the characteristics of the Four-Element Warehouse, which are easy to defend and difficult to attack, and their determination and strength to fight, successfully resisted the attack of the Japanese army. Although the defenders of the Sihang Warehouse held their positions, the soldiers faced the dilemma of insufficient food due to the lack of supplies in the positions. In this case, it was Du Yuesheng who fully mobilized his own strength, paid for it, and relied on his personal connections to send food and clothing to the hands of the Sihang Warehouse Defense Army.

Du Yuesheng is a businessman, he is not unaware of the importance of money, but he also understands that even if he has more money, if the country is gone, what is the use of this money? Therefore, Du Yuesheng put the life and death of the country first and did his best to help the anti-Japanese fighters.

Care for the warriors and give advice

After the Sihang Warehouse Defenders retreated to the concession, the Concession Bureau feared retaliation from the Japanese army and put the lone army under house arrest. The lone soldier who was put under house arrest was extremely stressed and in a very bad state.

Du Yuesheng also knew the situation of the lone soldiers at this time, so he thought of a way to rescue these soldiers. This method is to organize unemployed workers in Shanghai to disguise themselves as sympathizers and enter the lone army house arrest, and then exchange clothes with the lone soldiers. Then, the lone soldiers took the opportunity to leave and return to the place where they were fighting. In doing so, it can be a good way to confuse the eyes of the concession supervisors, and the security is higher.

However, because Xie Jinyuan believes that as a soldier, he should be bright and upright, "the light should come, and he should also go away", and he did not want to risk the lives of refugees because he wanted a way to live. So Xie Jinyuan refused this request and chose to stay under house arrest. Although Du Yuesheng's proposal was rejected, it also fully reflected that Du Yuesheng himself also had certain military capabilities, showing his concern for anti-Japanese fighters.

Stick to your heart and help the patriotic cause

After the fall of Shanghai, the Japanese threw an "olive branch" to Du Yuesheng, but Du Yuesheng strongly refused. In November 1937, he left Shanghai for Hong Kong. Then Du Yuesheng organized the People's Action Committee and became the leader of the Chinese gangs. Later, he moved to Chongqing and established the Hengshe Headquarters.

This series of operations shows Du Yuesheng's strong commercial ability, and also shows his determination to vigorously develop business. In 1945, after the victory of the War of Resistance Against Japan, he returned to Shanghai to consolidate his position in Shanghai. Later, the Shanghai Senate elected the speaker, and Du Yuesheng was elected speaker, but because the Kuomintang was not so supportive of him, he did not take office. Du Yuesheng, who was elected speaker of the Parliament, abandoned it and instead developed forces in various industries such as industry and commerce, finance, transportation, culture, education, and journalism, so as to strengthen his position.

Because Du Yuesheng's prestige in Shanghai was extremely high, the Kuomintang wanted him to follow him to Taiwan, and the Communists wanted him to stay in Shanghai. However, in the end, Du Yuesheng chose to go to Hong Kong. On August 16, 1951, a generation of legends Du Yuesheng died of illness in Hong Kong.
