SE applied for a trademark for its 90s game Gex or will restart the IP

According to Gemattsu, Square Enix has filed a new trademark application for Gex, a platform game developed by Crystal Dynamics Studios in the 1990s.

The application was filed on December 15 according to the website of the European Union Intellectual Property Office, where Square Enix was listed as the owner. Gex was previously owned by England-based gaming company Eidos Interactive, which became the parent company of Crystal Dynamics in 1998. Eidos Interactive was acquired by SE in 2009, so the rights to Gex are also vested in SE.

Gex, the first game in the series, was released on PlayStation One, Sega Saturn, 3DO, and Windows in 1995. Parts II and III were published in 1998 and 1999, respectively. According to people at Unseen64, the fourth work was originally intended to be developed for playStation 2, but was later canceled. The cancelled works have only seen two concept drawings.

Then, in 2017, SE introduced a range of Eidos attributes. As part of the "Square Enix Collective", a program that allows developers to create games based on old IP, Gex is part of the series. The SE trademark application for Gex is likely to mean that the plan to restart the series of IP is not far away.
